Concept Note for the establishment of Molecular Bioscience and Bioinformatics Research Group in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Several research groups that cut across different disciplines exist in the University of Nigeria Nsukka. These research groups have played very crucial roles in teaching and they have formed the platform for better research outputs as well as creating visibility for our dear university. However, among all these existing research groups, only few if not non are Molecular Biology/Molecular Bioscience based. In addition, none of the existing research groups addresses research issues related to bioinformatics. Lack of such a research group has hampered the progress in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics based research. Staff of the university who have research interest in these areas have continuously faced the challenge of sending samples abroad for analysis as well as spending huge amounts of money on sample analysis oversees. Because of these mentioned challenges, we have decided to establish a research group that will deal with the aforementioned problems, the name of the research group shall be; Molecular Bioscience and Bioinformatics Research Group and it will be domiciled in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UNN.

The research group among other things will offer an excellent opportunity for the academic and technical staff of our university to improve on their research activities. The research group will also impact positively on the students of our university and beyond through capacity building workshops, seminars and students training. Additionally, the research group will help in research collaboration among the staff of our university and those in other research institutions in the country. It will also create a good platform for research grant applications for our university staff.  The research group will offer our undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to go through training in Molecular biology and bioinformatics skills. Such skills will not only expose them to this new research area but will also enable them to be competitive outside our university. Experience has shown that staff and students of our university who go for bench work outside the country or who are pursuing their post graduate studies out of the country find it difficult to cope with research in this new area of science.

Objectives of the research group

  1. To strengthen molecular biology and bioinformatics-based research in our University.
  2. To create a platform for research grant writing and to encourage research collaboration among the staff of our University.
  • To create a platform for staff training in molecular biology and bioinformatics skills through workshops and seminars.
  1. To create more visibility for our University through better research outputs.
  2. To collaborate with the UNESCO Biotechnology Center in our University and other biotechnology centers across the country for a better research output.

Membership of the group

Although the research group is domiciled in the faculty of veterinary medicine, the members of the group shall be academic and technical staff drawn from different faculties of the university. These members will comprise Professors, Senior lecturers and technical staff as well as junior academic staff of the university.

The research group and its facilities will enhance the personnel and equipment resources of the university.  Any staff of the University with skills in molecular biology or bioinformatics is eligible to be a member of the group. Also, membership of the research group will include postgraduate students and staff of the university who have interest in molecular biology and bioinformatics-based research. So far, the members who have indicated interest to work with the group are senior and junior academic staff of the university with proven track records in research who have also published widely in both local and international journals.

Sustainability Plan

The activities of the group shall be self-sustained through training workshops, seminars and grant applications. These activities will constitute sources of revenue to sustain the group. It is also envisaged that the research group will provide avenues for collaboration with other research institutions within and outside Nigeria. Such collaborative work will enhance the sustainability of the group’s activities.

Significance and benefits of the research Group

  • The proposed research group will expand the research capabilities of the university through training and skill acquisition.
  • It will enhance community services through diagnosis, control and management of important animal and human diseases.
  • The research group will also act as a means of capacity building for the staff and students of our university.
  • It will also help our staff and students to have a proper understanding of molecular biology and bioinformatics as new research tools as well as making them to compete favorably beyond the shores of Nigeria.
  • High impact research and publications from the group will improve the visibility/ranking of our University.

This concept note is to notify the university management about the research group, the activities of the group and our objectives.

Sir, with this concept note, we are requesting for your kind approval of the research group. Your approval will help us commence our activities fully and the university will obviously benefit from the research group. We have attached with this concept note, the CV of all the members of the research group. We hope and believe that you will give our request the attention it deserves.
