CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment Workshop (QMRA Africa)

Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment Workshop (QMRA Africa)

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Introduction and Background: The WATER Africa Network in collaboration with Dr. Jade Mitchell, Michigan State University (USA); Dr. Mark Weir, The Ohio State University (USA); Dr. Vincent Chigor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN); and Prof. Cheikh Bécaye Gaye, Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Sénégal) call for applications to participate in Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) Training Workshop. The workshop is funded by the 2020 Alliance for African Partnerships Transforming Institutions Grant, Michigan State University (USA).

QMRA is a translational science requiring integration of knowledge from mathematics, statistics, biology, engineering, and public health. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of QMRA, few institutions or programs offer such training though it is widely sought after due to the high utility for producing actionable translational research. This workshop will provide hands-on exposure to QMRA approaches and software, including mentor-facilitated development of relevant research and modelling by interdisciplinary teams.

Led by top scientists, QMRA Africa is a cross disciplinary, 2-day training programme aimed at improving knowledge and developing capacity for addressing public health issues. Participants will attend lectures in the QMRA field, engage in hands-on exercises, collaborate to conduct a QMRA, and enrol into quality mentorship. Applications are invited from Early Career Faculty Members and Graduate Students in the following fields:

  1. Engineering (Biosystems/Civil/Environmental)
  2. Geology (Hydro/Environmental Geology)
  3. Microbiology (Environmental/Public Health)
  4. Public Health (Medical/Pharmaceutical Sciences)
  5. Food Science and Food Security
  6. Other (Biological and Agricultural Sciences)
