ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY FOR THE POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR

  • Preamble

The Governing Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka hereby announces that the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University is vacant. In accordance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Decree 1993, Decree No. 11 as amended, the Council directs that applications be invited from suitably qualified and distinguished Professors with cognate experience in university teaching, research and administration.

 

  • About the University:

A law to establish the University in the Eastern Region of Nigeria was passed in 1955. The enactment of this legislation to establish the university was inspired particularly by Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the then Premier of the Eastern Region. The University of Nigeria was formally opened on 7th October, 1960 as the climax of the Nigerian Independence celebrations in the Eastern Region. Her Royal Highness, the Princess Alexandra of Kent, representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 at the Nigerian Independence celebrations, performed the opening ceremonies and laid the foundation stone of one of the University’s early buildings. Classes began on 17th October 1960 with an enrolment of 220 students and 13 members of the academic staff. The University of Nigeria is a land-grant University modelled after the Michigan State University, USA. The University was taken over along with the other Universities in the country by the Federal Government on 1st April, 1973.

 

The basic objectives of the University are: to seek the truth, to teach the truth, and to preserve the truth. The motto of the University is “To Restore the Dignity of Man.”

 

Vision statement:

To create a functional, globally competitive and research-focused University which is not just an Ivory Tower but responsive to the needs of the society while delivering world-class education and knowledge.

 

 

Mission statement:

To place the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in the forefront of research and development, innovation, knowledge transfer and human resource development in the global academic terrain, while promoting the core values which will ensure the restoration of the dignity of man.

 

  • The Job

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University as well as the ex-officio Chairman of Senate and Member of the Governing Council. He or She is responsible to Council in matters of policy implementation in the areas of finance, property/facilities, general and effective administration of the institution. The Vice-Chancellor is also responsible to the University Senate, for the administration of academic programmes, and staff and students’ discipline, in consonance with extant rules and regulations.

 

  • The Candidate

The Candidate for the post of Vice-Chancellor must be a distinguished academic. He / She should be a proven manager of human and material resources. Specifically, the candidate shall be expected to: be a full Professor of not less than eight (8) years in a recognized university as at the date of this advertisement. He/She should not be more than 65 years old at the time of taking up the appointment. 

Such:

  • candidate is required to have garnered enough experience in university administration;
  • be a highly innovative, dynamic and self-motivated academic with ability to provide academic leadership (Management and Administration);
  • be a person with good grasp of information and communication technology skills;
  • possess high reputation nationally and internationally and be able to create the needed bridges between the University community on one hand, and its stake-holders on the other hand;
  • demonstrate high international visibility and respect in academia as reflected in his/her academic research publications and external linkages with evidence of attracting grant(s) to the university (UNN) or any other recognised university by the University Senate;
  • be a person of courage but humane, who can take decisive actions on the merit of facts and principles;
  • provide evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students especially at the PhD level;
  • be physically and mentally fit to undertake the duties required of a Vice-Chancellor and other assigned functions as directed by the University Governing Council; and
  • provide in not more than five hundred (500) words, his/her vision and mission for the University.

 

NOTE: Previous membership of any university Governing Council as well as possession of PhD degree would be added advantage.

 

Method of Application

Interested candidates must submit 30 copies of their application along with 30 copies of their Curriculum Vitae which shall contain the following:

(i) Full Name;

(ii)  Date of Birth;

(iii) Marital Status;

(iv) Educational Qualifications;

(v)  Nationality;

(vi) Professional and Academic Achievements;

(vii) Community Service rendered;

(viii) Publications (Listed in chronological order);

(ix) National and International Honours/Awards;

(x) Positions held (with dates);

(xi) Any other relevant information.

 

  • Every candidate shall submit 30 copies of statement of his/her own vision and mission for the University;

 

  • In the case of a candidate identified and nominated by the Search Team, the Curriculum Vitae must be accompanied by a letter of consent, duly signed and dated by the candidate

 

  • All candidates must supply, on their application forms, the names and addresses of three referees. Each referee must be contacted by the applicant to forward a confidential report directly to the Registrar;

 

  • The sealed envelope containing the completed application should be boldly marked POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR, UNN at the top left-hand corner of the envelope;
  • All applications are to be submitted under confidential cover to the Registrar and Secretary to Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to reach her not later than six (6) weeks from the date of this advertisement;

 

  • Application not received by 3.00pm on the last day will not be accepted.

 

  • Salary and Conditions of Service

The Salary and Conditions of service are as applicable to the post of Vice-Chancellor in all Federal Universities in Nigeria, and as may be determined by the Government/Council from time to time.
