Name

Transdisciplinary African Studies Research Group

Research Focus

African Studies; Area Studies

Purpose/Justification

The contemporary world is one in which knowledge production and utilization has continued to be the major sources of power and historical advancements among the different sections of humanity. Universities have also apparently continued to play very fundamental roles in the advancement of the different sections of humanity depending mostly on the nature and quality of knowledge production that they continuously embark on. The University of Nigeria Nsukka has been at the forefront of knowledge production in specific areas and specialties among African and world universities. Nevertheless, some areas would appear to be highly underemphasized.

One of such neglected areas is the area of African Studies that are transdisciplinary in scope. Although the University of Nigeria is simply the first African University to start a dedicated African studies research program with a near excellent performance and global renown in the early years, in recent times it appears to have lost the initiative to other African Universities most of whom are located in Nigeria. Not only has the university of Nigeria given up its visibility in international African studies circles, it has also not laid sufficient emphasis on the interdisciplinarity or transdisciplinarity of whatever extant African studies researches that are being conducted currently in the University.

Against the foregoing background, the purpose of the Transdisciplinary African Studies Research Group will be to champion the production of locally relevant knowledge for social development by undertaking transdisciplinary African studies research. This is in line with the mission to place the University of Nigeria in the forefront of research and development, innovation, knowledge transfer and human resource development in the global academic terrain while restoring the dignity of the African man thereby.

Goals and Objectives

  1. To work with other reseaerches and research groups towards creating a globally competitive and research focused University of Nigeria
  2. To contribute towards putting the University of Nigeria at the forefront of knowledge production in Africa and in the world.
  • To promote the capacity of the university of Nigeria to be a world leader in innovation, research and development, and human resource development.
  1. To engender the professional growth and development of individual members of the Research Group through engaging in regular transdiciplianry research projects and the dissemination of research results via reputable channels and outlets also to the glory of the University of Nigeria.
  2. To engage in such other activities that would help to meaningfully implement the University of Nigeria Research Policy.
