Dealing With Student Diversity And Disabilities In The Classroom

Teacher Issues. Challenges And Support Services

Williams Emeka Obiozor, Ed. D

Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania

Abstract

Today’s classroom teachers are faced with issues of punctuality and regular attendance of Students, active participation, completion and submission of assignments on time, test-taking problems and overall academic achievement of students. This could be as a result of a ‘hidden’ learning disability. How can teachers identify students with learning disabilities in the classroom even when they are not notified by Students Affairs Office in any given institution of learning? This paper will address these issues, as well as provide information to college or university faculty and staff n the provision / soliciting for available support services on campus for the students’ welfare and academic success.

Abstract

Effective Learning requires that learners apply those learning skills that help them approach their learning tasks in a systematic and goal-focused manner. Experience has shown that many poor achieving learners do not possess these skills. This study therefore examined the effect of instruction in metacognitive skills on poor achieving junior secondary school students science test anxiety and achievement in selected science concepts. The study also explored the interaction effect of instruction in metacognitive skills and gender in the science test anxiety and achievement of the low achieving students. The study was guided by seven research questions and six hypotheses. A non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design involving on treatment and one control group was adopted. A total of 173 junior secondary class two students identified as low achieving in integrated sciences from Enugu Education Zone were used for the study. Thie metacognitive skills instructional Programme (MSIP) was developed, validated and used for the study. Three instruments: Science Concept Achievement Test, Metacognitive Skills Assessment Scale (MSAS) and Science Test Anxiety Scale (STAS) were developed, validated and used for data collection. The results suggest that instruction in the metacognitive skills facilities higher achievement of the low achieving student in science and reduces their science test anxiety.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It is not only a health problem, but also a social, political and religious problem. It is a known factor that HIV/AIDS has become an epidemic in Nigeria and in the whole world. Despite the efforts of the Federal Government and assistance of the International Communities, HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to present a growing threat to sustainable development and inflict heavy toll on young people. The study was designed to investigate the knowledge level and attitude of secondary school biology students in Enugu State on HIV/AIDS. The study employed a descriptive survey design and a sample of two hundred and forty (240) senior secondary 11 students was used. A questionnaire developed by the researchers was used for data collection, t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding showed there was a significant difference at p<0.05 in the mean scores of male and female students on HIV/AIDS awareness and knowledge in favour of males. In addition, there was a significant difference at p<0.05 in the mean attitude scores of male and female students on HIV/AIDS also in favour of males. The study recommends that there is still need for adequate education for the students especially on the females about HIV/AIDS and mobilizing them to be social agents in reducing the threat of HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

This paper looked at the quality control measures necessary for the smooth operation of pre-primary education and the need to maintain quality in pre-primary education programame. To effectively do this, the paper studied the objectives and policies of the National Policy on Education (NPE) as they affect Early Childhood/Pre-Primary Education viz-a-viz the National minimum standard set for uniformity in the operation of pre-primary education. Their similarities and differences were looked at. It went further to outline the situation on the ground as it actually is, x-raying the situation as a far cry from the laudable objectives of both the National Policy on Education and the National Minimum Standard. Various ways of moving ahead from the current situation were also suggested.

Effective Media Information Networking And Public Education for

Sustenance of Community Peace And Security In Nigeria

Barr. Peter N. Nwokolo

Department of Mass Communication,

University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Abstract.

Peace is a sine qua non for security and development at the interpersonal, intercommunity, interstate, national and the international levels. One indispensable condition for peace is justice, giving every one his due. A peaceful nation is a healthy, and a wealthy nation. Ironically, in Nigeria today, much effort, wealth, time and energy are being wasted in inter community disputes, not to talk of of innocent blood that has been shed as a result of fratricidal wars. Some imperialist school of thought has maintained that man by nature in any society is in a constant state of confusion, conflict, disagreement and crisis; that strife is the foundation of all high virtues and faculties of men; that peace is a ‘sheep’s paradise’ where nations decay while war brings the virile virtues. It must be however stated that the hostile propaganda days of social Darwinism have since given way to the constant search for peace as a better days of social human progress. This is because all efforts geared towards bettering human conditions of existence such as poverty alleviation will amount to naught if there is no peace and tranquility in our communities. There is need for collaborative efforts and intensive public education by the various social institutions especially the churches, traditional authorities as the Igwes, the Obas, the Emirs and the mass media, (both modern and traditional to work, towards minimizing conflict in Nigeria. The judiciary, non-governmental organizations as well as law enforcement agencies together with the government of the day should establish a network of information flow between the urban and rural areas and between the governments and the traditional institutions for conflict resolution and management. This is the thrust of this work.

Utilization of Information And Communication Technology For

Quality Instruction In Colleges of Education

Ezugwu, G. G. (Ph.D)

Psychology Department, F. C. E. Zaria

Abstract.

The use of information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching apparently facilities both the effort of the teacher as well as the learner, as the entire world is said to have been globally connected, it then follows that the connectivity has no exception. The institutions of higher learning are presumably supported to be the benefactors of most of these ICT facilities. For instance institutes of education, faculties of education, colleges of education and other teacher producing institutions, stand the chance of utilizing these facilities fully for instruction purpose. This presupposes that the prospective teacher in our educational institution should benefit from these facilities so as to equip him/her self to have the fore-knowledge of the task ahead. This study was intended to find out the extent of utility of the provided Information and Communication Technology facilities in instruction in our educational institutions. Two hundred and seven lecturers were sampled for the study using simple random sampling. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire. The data collected for the study were analyzed using mean. The result shows that very few of the lecturer utilize ICT faculties in their instruction.

Recommendations were made in line with findings.

Understanding In A Typical Classroom Learning Situation

  1. M. Mbah

Department of Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian Languages,

University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Abstract.

This paper is a pedagogic study of the Igbo tone. It is a descriptive research. It identifies tone as one of the most problematic aspects of the Igbo Language teaching and learning. Conceptually, it associates the main problem of learning, tone with its being a prosodic Feature. It is superimposed on the segments in all its forms. This characteristic makes the identification of the pitch level of each tone in a word problematic for the teacher and student. In addition, the tone pattern of some words varies from dialect to dialect, and therefore from dialect to the Standard Igbo. This fact makes it necessary that both the teacher and the learner have to be abreast with the tone pattern of each lexical item in the particular variety concerned to get the tone mark right. Furthermore, the tone patterns of the Igbo words change when the words bearing them occur together in a grammatical construction. The paper provides answers to questions regarding how to identify the pattern of individual words and words in associative constructions in the Igbo Language in a teaching learning situation. It further provides a didactic step by step procedure for marking tone in the Igbo language grammar bearing in mind the available tone marking conventions in the literature. The teacher no doubt needs to know this procedure as a working tool for effective teaching and learning of tone in particular and Igbo grammar in general. The learner needs it even more to have a firm grasp of it and Igbo grammar generally.

Effect of Cognitive Load on Students’ Schema Transfer

Ngwoke, Dominic U. (Ph.D)

Department of Educational Foundations,

University of Nigeria Nsukka.

Abstract

Some Instructional Presentation Formats may make more demand than their informational isomorphic species on the cognitive processing system of learners. A recurring problem for instructional designers is what information structure would be least demanding on the limited cognitive processing resources of learners with regard to processing; storage, retrieval, and transfer of concepts to be learned? This study addressed part of that problem by examining the effect of cognitive load on students’ schema transfer. The study was executed through a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group, pretest – posttest design. The sample was 215 Senior Secondary Class !! Students drawn from two schools in Nsukka Urban, Enugu State, Nigeria. A test of transfer of the scientific principle of locomotion (TTP_ developed by the researcher was used to collect data. Data were analyzed using means, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Statistics. Findings indicated that the main effect of cognitive load on students’ schema transfer was significant. Teachers are invited to ensure greater efficacy of instructional formats by physically removing redundant information that is not critical to meaningful processing of instruction.

Cognitive Styles And Design Of Instruction And Assessment Tools For Open And Distance Learners (ODL)

Osuji, U. S. A. (Ph.D)

School of Education

National Open University of Nigeria

Abstract

Cognitive style is a major dimension of individual differences. It has been described as a fairly fixed characteristic of an individual, which is static and a relatively in-built feature of the individual. Since Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is a relatively new and important force in higher education system, it becomes necessary that one knows the characteristics of the distance learners and how to design distance education to suit the cognitive styles of the distance learners. This paper has looked at some research findings and literature in order to identify different aspects of cognitive styles, assessment/review of five major cognitive styles, the concept of Open and Distance learning, characteristics of distance learners, designing instructions to suit the cognitive styles and characteristic of learners and designing suitable evaluation administration in ODL.

Influence of Self –Regulated Learning Strategy on Academic Achievement, Self Efficacy, and Self-Esteem of University Students

Umeano, E. C. & Adimora, D. E.

Curriculum Development and Instructional Material Centre

University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Abstract.

The study investigated the influence of self-regulated learning strategy on academic achievement, self-efficacy and self-esteem of university students in two Nigerian universities. Using the Ex post facto design, the study made use of a sample of seven hundred and forty (740) second year students in the Faculty of Education in these universities. Five research questions and four null hypotheses guided the study. It was found that students’ self-regulated learning significantly influences academic achievement, self-efficacy, self-esteem and that gender has no significant influence on the University students, self-regulated learning. Recommendations made include, among others, that lecturers encourage students to control their efforts and attentions when facing distraction and uninteresting tasks and that lecturers stress the importance of emphasizing the application of multiple self-regulatory learning strategies rather than single strategies. The lecturers themselves should, first be trained in the self regulated learning strategy.

Gender Bias In Curriculum Implementation: Case Of Colleges of Education

In Teacher Preparation

Dr. Ijeoma R. Odoemenam & Dan Enyi (Ph.D)

Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo

Abstract

This paper discusses gender bias and disparity in Curriculum Implementation in Colleges of Education in Nigeria and posits that there is limited integration of gender issues in staffing and low enrolment of female students in science and science related courses. Discrimination which is inherent in the prevailing masculine images of science in teacher preparation curriculum and in the use of gender insensitive resource materials was identified as a hindrance to effective participation of women in job opportunities in Science and technology areas in the society. Strategies for eliminating gender bias and disparity

include an intervention programme by UNICEF and ETF for females in the area of science courses in schools to increase female enrolment, laying emphasis in science courses in remedial programmes in colleges of education, use of appropriate gender sensitive instructional materials in secondary schools and achieving parity in academic staff strength through employing more females.

Abstract

The study investigated the efficacy of students’ interaction patterns (cooperative, competitive and individualistic) on their psychomotor learning outcomes. A quasi-experimental research design of specific pretest posttest non-equivalent control group design was adopted. The study was conducted in three secondary schools in Enugu Urban of Enugu State. The sample size was two hundred and fifty three senior Secondary One (SSI) Students from the three schools. The instrument used for data collection was Geometrical Construction Achievement Test (GCAT). The test items in the instrument were constructed and validated by the researchers. The experiment lasted for four weeks, at the end of which the GCAT was administered. Distance Education In Nigeria: Quality Issues

Gana Matthew Attahiru

Abstract

The demand for university education is on the increase yearly. However, the available facilities are inadequate to meet the demand at hand. Successive governments adopt one strategy/policy or the other to curb these problems. These strategies have not really resolved the yearning for university education for the average prospective students in the country. Thus, government has been looking for means of resolving this crisis. One way the government attempted to resolve this issue was through the establishment of private universities. This instead of resolving the issues rather created classes of institutions among learners in the country. This then drew the attention of well meaning Nigerians in searching for an alternative education for all irrespective of tribe, region, fund, religion and political affiliations. Thus, distance education was identified as an alternative complementary system to the conventional known and accepted means of acquiring education in the country. However, a lot of questions have been raised by some policy makers, members of the public, and some academies in respect of its qualities, most especially in Africa and Nigeria in particular. Thus, this paper examines distance education and its quality issues in the following areas: the personnel, the course materials, the facilitators and the students, and the infrastructure. The objective is to address quality issues of the system, historical research approach was adopted.

Abstract.

Gender issue is a social problem rooted in conception, perpetuated by cultural/religious practices and early socialization. Gender discrimination could be against any of the sexes, male or female but is more on females. Intellectuals have been denied opportunities for excellence due to discrimination. Early childhood education would be an instrument to nip the gender discrimination from the root. Therefore, the society requires sound and quality teachers who would provide gender sensitive education and parent education at this early stage. This paper addresses the issue of gender, teacher, curriculum, attitude, funding as they relate to gender and teacher preparation. It highlights the implication of gender and teacher preparation for early childhood education and recommends way forward.

Abstract

The study was designed to assess teachers’ effectiveness using students’ ratings in Federal Government Colleges in North Central Geopolitical Zone. The number of teachers assessed by the students was, giving a sample of 25 from each school. The students being taught by these sampled teachers were used to assess them. The instrument used to collect data was Students’ Assessment of Teachers Questionnaire (SETEQ). The instrument was validated and trial tested and response obtained from the respondents were used to determine the reliability coefficient, (internal consistency) and it was found to be 0.74 for the whole instrument, and 0.42, 0.59, 0.50, 0.44 and 0.41 for sections A to E respectively. The responses on the instrument were analyzed using mean and standard deviations as well as using inter subscale correlation. The results of the analyses revealed that teachers seem to have knowledge of the subject matter but at times failed to communicate the concepts of the subject matter in a manner that students will understand because of their intonations.

The results also offered a rationale and support for the use of students’ ratings of teacher effectiveness. On the basis of the findings, it was suggested that changes are needed within the structure and organization of school systems for successful implementation of every subject curriculum.

Global-Elite Dailies: An Appraisal Of The L’osservatore

Romano And The La Prensa Newspapers

Barr. Nwokolo Peter N.

Department of Mass Communication

University of Nigeria , Nsukka

Abstract

The qualities of newspapers are determined by the quality of news items and other editorial materials they publish. While some pander to low tastes, pursuing profit at the expense of objective news reporting, some distinguish themselves by exhibiting high professionalism and eschewing sensationalism. This second category applies moderation in the quest for wealth and high profit-margin. They do not pander to low taste, obscenities and the lewd. Their language is clear, syntax perfect and picture illustrations highly socially redeeming. These papers, found in different parts of the globe, deal with serious factual issues, value truth and balance, and present news and interpretation in a responsible way. The credible newspapers have been referred to as the ‘Elite Press’ and are found in both closed and pluralistic societies. The study examined the qualities of these papers through indebt study with a view to advising the Nigerian proprietors and journalists to evaluate these global elite papers in their styles and modus operandi. No Nigerian newspaper has been found worthy of the elite category. This perhaps, is partly due to the secrecy that shrouds most government activities and the distrust between the press and government and its agencies in Nigeria. This paper urges a change of attitude and a speedy passage of freedom of information bill into law to make Nigerian newspaper reports more credible and dependable.

Abstract

There has been a shift in the system of educating the hearing impaired in separate schools to educating them in an inclusive classroom. Effective teaching and learning for the hearing impaired in the inclusive classroom will be difficult to achieve if the regular teacher are not equipped with the necessary competencies. This paper seeks to ascertain the competencies teachers need to be trained in for effectiveness in an inclusive classroom with hearing impaired pupils. It also sought to determine the extent teachers possess these competencies. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Four research questions guided the study. The study revealed that teachers need training on the communication modes used by the hearing impaired pupils to be able to assess their receptive communication functioning and also to help them use hearing aids. Teachers were also found to possess these competencies to a low extent. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend that workshops, seminars and conferences should be organized for regular teachers in order to cope in an inclusive classroom.

Department of Educational Foundations,

Faculty of Education

University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Abstract.

The impact of television viewing habit (TVHa) may have on development of basic cognitive skills among children is indeterminable. Television viewing habit here refers to the average daily viewing hour of a primary school age child. This study investigated the impact of TVHa on the development of basic verbal reasoning skills among primary school children. The study employed Ex-Post Facto design. The study was carried out in Nsukka Urban, Enugu State, using primary 5 pupils as the target population. The sample of the study was 429 pupils composed as follows: intense viewers – 187; moderate viewers-128 and low viewers-

  1. The instrument was a 20 item multiple choice Test of Acquisition of Basic Verbal Reasoning Skills (TABVRS). Data were analyzed using means, standard deviation and one way Analysis of Variance statistics while Scheffe test was done to determine the direction of the significant difference. The results of the study revealed that there were significant mean difference in the TABVRS scores among the three study groups in favour of intense viewing groups. Children who showed moderate TVHa exhibited superior performance on the TABVRS, while intense TVHa impacted negatively on children’s development of basic verbal reasoning skills. The educational implication is that unfettered access or low access

to television viewing may hamper the development of verbal reasoning skills which serve as a precursor to other aspects of general development. It is therefore recommended that parents, care givers and all who are concerned with child development should strive to see that children develop proper TVHa early in life.

The Nigerian Press And The Law of Sedition: A Progressive Interpretation

Peter N. Nwokolo

Department of Mass Communication

University of Nigeria , Nsukka

Abstract

Imperialism has been described as the highest state of capitalism, and obtains when the latter, with all its exploitative tentacles, is exported to other lands. It is important to stress that Europeans were not in Africa on a civilizing mission as claimed, nor were they inspired

16

by charitable intensions, but were purely motivated by the desire to exploit Africa’s human and natural resources, using both the stick and the carrot. Consequently, they enacted draconian laws drawn as ordinances that facilitated the achievement of their single mined economic motive, even if such laws denied Africans their natural and inalienable rights as humans. An example was the Seditious Offence Ordinance of 1909 transplanted into Nigeria to force the natives into a groove of silence while the violence and plunder lasted. Ironically this law, until recently, has continued to be in our statute book years after we achieved independence and embraced democracy. This paper seeks to show how the judiciary performed its constitutional role of upholding the supremacy of the constitution over any other law by striking out, as unconstitutional, the law of sedition adjudged one of the greatest obstacles to the right of free speech in Nigeria.

Towards a Framework For an Educated and Humanized Role Model For a Global Education Policy and Practices

Ike O. Aghaosa (Ph.D)

Department of Educational Studies and Management

Faculty of Education, University of Benin.

Benin-City , Nigeria.

Abstract

The paper argues that an educated and humanized role model for a global education program is plausible. Using philosophical and documentary methods of analysis, deductions and inferences were made on the fundamental concepts, issues, and challenges. It is the paper’s contention that any vision and practical efforts for a global learning culture, must assess and clarify ‘what exactly is education-aims, content, modes of learning; the educated and humanized person and what should serve as an empirical model of the educated person for a global learning program. It is posited that any global learning frame work requires imagination and creative challenges. These would entail appreciating the philosophical, not the instrumental value of education and learning; unique and diverse elements of increasingly interactive cultures of the global village; and integrating them into a harmonious learning program.

Application of Learning Theories to Science Teaching: The Need for

Promoting Digital Higher Skills among Nigerian Students

  1. I. Wushishi

Department of Science Education,

Federal University of Technology, Minna.

Abstract.

The paper discussed the application of some learning theories to science teaching and the need to promote digital higher order thinking skills among Nigerian Students. This is as a result of the fact that information and communication technology (ICT) has brought tremendous changes in the way students learn. In Nigeria, the problem of science teaching has been attributed to the teachers’ inability to help students to learn science in a meaningful manner. Teachers are required to acquired good understanding of classroom practices in order to ensure effective learning of science. Learning theories of David P. Ausubel, Robert Gagne and Benjamin Bloom about how students learn have implications on the teachers conduct in the classroom. Blooms’ six intellectual categories in the though process are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation in their order of increasing complexity. The last four have been identified to be the HOTS. These categories have been revised by former Bloom’s student. The revised have also been digitally applied in order to capture current trend in learning through information and communication technology. It has been suggested that in order to promote creativity and innovation in science, digital HOTS applications should be promoted because they offer opportunities to analyze, evaluate and solve problems and offer opportunities to practice analytical and critical thinking skills.

Nigerian Fashion Industry And The Global Fashion Development:

Meeting the Challenges Of Human Capital Development

Okpara, Tochukwu Felicia

Dept. of Fine & Applied Arts

University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Abstract

The paper seeks to find out factors responsible for the motivation or shrinking of the driving force towards globalization of Nigeria fashion industry. It seeks to investigate how information and communication technology can help in projecting our fashion industry globally. The challenges inherent in our huge population of fashion-conscious Nigerians – the status of a ‘developing’ nation – leaves so much desire and expectations in the minds of many Nigerians as it concerns participation in fashion industry at global stage. The poor quality of fashion teaching professions and infrastructures both within and outside fashion institutions, colleges, and universities, the worsening industrialization leaves little chance for the expected globalization of our fashion industry. Globalization of Nigerian fashion industry has become necessary as it propels the nation towards new internationalism, and capitalism that is based on financial market rather than just manufacturing of designs and fabrics which Nigerians fabric industries are doing so well today. Nigerian fashion development, therefore, requires dependency on electronic technology, new globally accepted and understood fashion language, new values, and new labor flexibility to be able to meet global market requirement. The nee to know the extent to which Nigerian fashion industry has opened herself up to, submit to or share in the cross-boarder economic, technological, political and socio-cultural fashion exchange with other nations is the major concern of this paper.

Department of Science Education

University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Abstract:

This paper examined nature of problem solving process and relates it to problem solving in Chemical stoichiometry. The existing models of problem solving process were analyzed and their characteristics were discussed with reference to their applicability in solving problems in chemical stoichiometry. Considering the nature of chemical problems in the area of stoichiometry and persistent difficulties students experience in solving problems in the area, they were found to be inappropriate for solving chemical problems in stoichiometry. As a result, problem solving model that takes the peculiar characteristics of stoichiometric problems and students’ difficulties into account was designed for use in problem solving instructions by chemistry teachers. The model stipulates various steps to be taken in solving stoichiometric problems and mental activities required at each step in order to successfully solve stoichiometric problems.

This study sought to find out the drop-out rates in Universal Basic Education (Primary and Junior Secondary School) in Abia State. The study employed the descriptive survey design. Four (4) research questions were asked and two (2) hypotheses formulated to guide the study. Data were collected using a proforma to show the drop-out rates from enrolment in both primary and junior secondary schools in Abia State. This information was got from the statistics unit of Abia State Basic Education Board and Secondary Education Management Board. The research questions were answered using percentages while the hypotheses were tested using Chi-squared statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Results show that there were no drops in the primary schools while the trend is different in the Junior secondary school where it is clear that students have been dropping out of school. It was therefore recommended that the Federal Government should address the first MDGs goal of poverty and hunger reduction which may have contributed to these drops.

Strengths and Weaknesses: The journal provides current and regular information for both lecturers and students in Education and Social Sciences. It also provides opportunity for researchers to disseminate their findings. The Review of Education is a class A journal according the Yellow book (The Guide line for Appointment and Promotion in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka). Therefore many lecturer have preference for the journal. However, due to the fact that the journal is not online, majority of the contributor are limited to Nigeria and few foreign students and their friends. Besides, the journal is very limited in circulation.

Opportunities and Threats:  The journal serves as a source of income to the Institute of Education, most of her sandwich students and regular students from the Faculties of Education and Social Sciences always find the journal very useful for both literature review and contemporary issues in Education. The major threat to the journal is the availability of journals of equal repute on line that attract both local and international papers and provide equal information but better access to both students and lecturer. Besides, most of the online journals have Impact Factor (IF) and they are more attractive to researches to disseminate their findings.

Strategies to enhance the capacity of the journals:            1.The journal should be made more visible by putting it online

  1. The journal must be widely advertised to attract more international contributors.
  2. The journal should be made tractable by journal metric producing agencies so as to attain IF journal status.
