The Concept of Clinical Nursing Research
Clinical Nursing Research is a broad-based research group that was founded on the premise that professional nursing (practice) should be built upon a sound theoretical base that seeks to develop clinical competence of practitioners. Such practitioners are not only responsive to the changing health needs of the society but questioning outcomes of nursing interventions, also advancing and testing knowledge on which nursing practice is based. The group believes that it is through research evidence that practice will improve and quality nursing care established in Nigeria as it obtains in other countries.
Justification/briefs: In clinical practice, nurses remain the largest group of health workers, spending 24hours with the clients. They have the potential to shape the health care delivery service of any health organization. However, their number notwithstanding, nursing care continues to be driven by tradition, authority, and stereo-typed procedure rather than research evidence, in spite of the increase in the quantity of nursing research and the inclusion of research content in current curricula by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) (Agbedia and Richards, 2013).   Applying research findings in nursing practice is perhaps the greatest challenge facing the nursing profession today in Nigeria (Agbedia, 2013)
Therefore this research group seeks to provide high quality data for the design of evidence based practice guidelines for professional nursing that will ensure cost effectiveness services to patients and family members.
Intent: Research for knowledge to optimize quality nursing care and client sensitive nursing outcomes in all health care settings.
Research Focus: to carry out research in all aspects of clinical nursing practice in Nigeria. Also to undertake researches that will advance the international understanding and development of nursing in Nigeria as a profession and discipline
Broad Areas of Research interest:
1. Emerging diseases of the future, with focus on nursing interventions/actions to prevent these chronic and life-long non-communicable diseases especially those constituting major disease burdens in Nigeria e.g Hypertension, Oncology, Diabetes Mellitus
2. Gerontology.
3. Ethical issues in nursing, end-of life care/palliative care
4. Pain assessment and management
5. Client satisfaction with care
6. Quality of life studies
7. Nursing Sensitive patient outcomes
8. Mental health nursing
9. Socio-cultural issues in Nigerian healthcare system
10. Psycho-social support
11. Developing theories underpinning Nursing within the Nigerian context.
Membership: Open to academic staff and postgraduate students in the Nursing Department, University of Nigeria. We will also like to partner with other disciplines in UNN, national and international scholars who are engaged in research in any of the above mentioned broad areas for collaborative research. Foundation members are as enumerated on the cover page.
Conclusion: Nursing research is one of the ways of evaluating practices and services provided,  and changing practice for better .(Ofi, Edet, Sowunmi, Anarado. 2007). Clinical nursing research is vital for finding new treatments and improving patient care and nurses are at the forefront of this process
