Research Topic: Understanding Islam in Nigeria: Patterns of Islamic
Dawah (Proselytization) in Eastern Nigeria
Concept notes/justification briefs/statements of intent
Extensive studies on Islam, Muslims, and the various expressions of the Islamic
faith in Nigeria exist with respect to Northern and South-western Nigeria, bastions of
Islam in the country. Similar studies for Eastern Nigeria—home to the Igbo, Efik, Ibibio,
Ijaw and other smaller groups that together form the latest frontier of Islam in the
country—had just recently begun to emerge with the result that a holistic understanding
of the manifestations of Islam in Nigeria as a whole is yet to be realised. Among the
works done on Islam in Eastern Nigeria are the foundational reports of Ottenberg (1971)
and Doi (1984) that surveyed Islamic advance into two village groups in Igboland; the
study on Islam in the city of Port Harcourt by Kilani (2008); and the history of its
emergence in Igboland by Uchendu (2011). These few, but very important, studies have
opened the gateway for further investigations into the growth of Islam into Eastern
Nigeria that would broaden both our knowledge of Islam in Nigeria and ‘African Islam’.
As a pathway to a richer understanding of Islam in Nigeria, our proposed study
will focus on the patterns of Islamic proselytization (dawah) in Eastern Nigeria. The
objective of this investigation is to understand the propelling factors behind the growing
conversions to Islam in this non-Muslim, Christian-dominated, region, where
conversions are at its all-time high since the introduction of the religion in the region in
the 1890s. The study is premised on two suppositions: Firstly, widespread conversions
are responsible sooner or later for multifarious changes, which make their occurrence
relevant to surviving generations and, therefore, worthy of scholarly attention. Secondly,
indications of Islamic fundamentalism in North-eastern Nigeria, in particular, suggest a
possible infiltration into Eastern Nigeria of extremist tendencies anytime in the future.
The proposed study will both widen our knowledge of the manner of transfer of
religious views to non-initiates and on the progress of Islam in Nigeria’s dominant
Christian region. The study’s significance lies in its contributions towards an
understanding of the contemporary history of Nigeria and the role of Islam in that
history. By providing a platform for mentoring younger scholars, this research
engagement will contribute to capacity building in the University of Nigeria. The research
findings will be widely disseminated at conferences, local and international, and in
publications of international standards.
