PUBLIC HEALTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH GROUP
Preamble
In order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the United Nations in search of the way forward, has called for refocusing on post-2015 Global Development Agenda. The main aim of this agenda is alleviation of extreme poverty of which public health intervention, as part of Healthcare Delivery, is an integral part. Development organizations are being mobilized to come together to proffer suggestions for solving health problems so as to afford good health which will lead to functional and sustainable development in other strata of life. Particularly the international community has adopted ‘One Health’ programme, which is an upgrade of public health involving all health professionals (Veterinarians, Medical doctors, Pharmacists etc) in prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging diseases of man and animals.
Nigeria is a member of the United Nations and the Universities in Nigeria are specialized and very important partners for the attainment of the goals of this new initiative. University of Nigeria is a registered member of the Nigerian Sustainable Development Solutions Network (NSDSN), a member of the consortium of Federal Universities both nationally and internationally. Member universities have been called upon to form research teams to contribute to the attainment of the Post-2015 global development goals through research, symposia, conferences, workshops and trainings. (bobbergdesigns.com) In response to the vice chancellor’s Strategic plan, this research group is formed to focus on Public Health and Sustainable Development Solutions.
Justification
There are many health issues, challenges and problems facing the Nigerian populace today and it is the responsibility of Nigerian universities to partner with stakeholders to study the health problems like emerging and re-emerging diseases, chemical and drug residues in food animal products, zoonoses, short-term and long-term health implications of the use of substandard and fake drugs, environmental toxicity from heavy metals and pollution. Therefore, there is need for multidisciplinary research group to focus on sustainable development issues with special emphasis on public health through research, seminar, workshops and training.
Statement of Intent
As a multidisciplinary research group, the intentions of the group are as follows:
- To carry out research in different areas of life with a view to promoting consumption of healthy and wholesome meat and meat products, controlling and preventing emerging and re-emerging diseases, controlling the use of substandard and fake drugs and unauthorized agro-chemicals to promote sustainable development of the society.
- To attract research grants to support the activities of the group.
- To organize conferences, workshops, and seminars to create awareness on the research areas above
- To organize trainings for human capital development
- To disseminate research findings in journals both national and international.
