ABSTRACT: This research investigated the effectiveness of Portland cement in the stabilization of Nigerian coal-reject and evaluated the potential use of the stabilized coal-reject for various construction purposes. Standard laboratory tests were performed to determine the engineering properties of the coal-reject in its natural state and after treatment with increasing percentages of Portland cement. The results indicate a significant improvement in the engineering properties of the coal-reject with a reduction in plasticity and shrinkage, as well as an increase in the strength and bearing capacity. With the addition of 2% Portland cement, the material met most Nigerian construction specifications for fills, embankment and sub-base. However, even with 10% Portland cement, it was only marginally suitable for the base course of heavily trafficked highways. Cette recherche a testé l’efficacité du ciment Portland pour la stabilisation de produits charbonneux de second choix du Nigéria et évalué les usages possibles de ce nouveau produit dans la construction. Des essais de laboratoire standardisés ont été réalisés pour déterminer les propriétés géotechniques des produits charbonneux initiaux et après traitement, en augmentant progressivement les teneurs en ciment Portland. Les résultats montrent une amélioration importante des propriétés géotechniques de ce nouveau produit avec une diminution de la plasticité et de l’aptitude au retrait ainsi qu’une augmentation de la résistance et de la capacité portante. Avec une addition de 2% de ciment Portland, le nouveau produit satisfait à la plupart des spécifications nigérianes pour les remblais, les digues et les couches de forme de chaussées. Cependant, même avec 10% d’ajout de ciment Portland, le nouveau produit était à peine convenable pour les couches de base de chaussées autoroutières à fort trafic.
