Main Research Focus of the RG:
|
The main focus of AGROTECH research group is to Trans-disciplinarily harness and upscale the use digital technologies in optimizing agriculture. Specifically, AGROTECH team will:
i. Search for, compile and create a data base of modern (digital ) technologies in Agricultute ii. Collaborate with networks and outfits that digitize farm operations iii. Participate in compttive grants tournaments that promote the application technology in farm operations
iv. Mainstream modern technologies in Agricultute in UNN through seminars and wokshops
v. Engagge in projects, run analysis of technology based information and activities for evidence-based policy advising.
vi. Advance and remain at the frontiers of the knowledge needed for mainstreaming farm-based technologies in policy formulations and implementations at all levels and sectors of the country’s governance and economy.
vii. Work with the relevant Federal and and State Ministries to contribute to national development.
viii. Conduct relevant contemporary technology-based and related research and participate actively in global, continental and national development issues.
ix. Respond to and participate competively in research grants tournaments and consultancy calls

Brief Bio of Members (with their Google Scholar and Research Gate links) | 1. PROFESSOR ANTHONIA ACHIKE is a Professor of Agricultural Economics and a Senior Research Fellow at the Environment for Development, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). She is also a global Adjunct faculty member of the Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa (Trapca), Arusha-Tanzania. She holds a PhD degree in Agricultural Economics, specializing in Agricultural Finance and Project Analysis. Currently, Prof Achike is the Director of the Gender and Development Policy Centre (GEN-CENT) of University of Nigeria Nsukka, the team leader of Nigeria’s Community Based Poverty Monitoring System (CBMS-Nigeria), UNN Focal Point for the Alliance for the African Partnership (AAP) and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM).

2. PROFESSOR NNAEMEKA CHUKWUONE is currently the Director of the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre (REPRC)- EfD Nigeria. He is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Senior Research Fellow in Gender and Development Policy Centre (GEN-CENT). For over fifteen years, he has been conducting research and policy advocacy on local and global issues in agriculture, environment and resource economics. He has published widely and presented at different international conferences and meetings. 3. Professor Paul K Baiyeri (PhD) is a professor of Crop Science and Horticulture. His research emphasis is on tropical fruit species and recently on specialty vegetable crops. Professor Baiyeri was formerly Head of the Department of Crop Science, and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria (UNN). He is a member of the International Society for Horticultural Science, the Horticultural Society of Nigeria, the Crop Science Society of Nigeria, and other national and international societies. He has over 255 articles published in national and international journals of repute. He was the recipient of the UNN Vice-Chancellor Research Leadership Award for the 2014/2015 academic year. Professor Baiyeri was formerly a research fellow and later a visiting scientist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Nigeria. His current research efforts are focused on sustainable crop production system intensification. Dr Chukwuma Ume is a lecturer at the department of Agricultural Economics, University of Nigeria. He holds a PhD in Agroecology and Environmental Economics from the Justus Liebig University, Germany, and a second PhD in Agribusiness and marketing from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He holds a master’s degree in Environment and Development from the sustainability research institute, University of Leeds, and bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics (First Class and overall best graduating student of the University, 2013/2014 session). He was awarded the Right Livelihood Junior Research Scientist Award in Environmental and resource management by the Centre for Environment and Development Research/ Zentrum für Entwicklungsforschung (ZEF) UN-Campus University of Bonn. His current research focuses on Agroecology and and use of sensors for sustainable farming in Africa. 5. Dr Azubike Achike has a PhD in Economics and MBA (Accountancy) as well as Administrative Staff College Certificate (ASCON). His job experience covers both administrative and academic duties. As a Deputy Director in Anambra State public service, he assisted in planning, execution and supervision of various government programmes among other assignments. He was Special Assistant to the Head of Service of Anambra State, making submissions and drafting letters on specific policy matters. Dr. Achike has also served as a resource person in manpower training for the Anambra State Universal Basic Eduction programme. Furthermore, he has served as a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Vocational Teacher Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and also a Facilitator for the Central Bank sponsored Entrepreneurship Development programme in the same University. Currently he is the Managing Director of Zukahari Services Limited, a private company that deals on research consultancy, training and logistics. Dr. Achike has attended both local and international conferences and has six local and international publications to his credit. He has served in different research projects and has received research training on modeling with GAMS, Impact Evaluation techniques and the use of such analytical tools as Stata, Eviews and R as well as locating and using materials on the internet for academic work.
