BACKGROUND
The Department started in 1961/62 with the undergraduate programme; while the post-graduate programme was added in 1980/81. Over these years, the pursuit of excellence in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes remains the main thrust and emphases of the Department. From inception up to 1979/80, the Department offered four- and five- year programmes leading to the bachelor’s degree B.Sc in Civil Engineering. By the decision of the Faculty Board of Engineering and with the popular support of the students the Bachelor of Science degree was changed to the Bachelor of Engineering B.Eng degree in 1979/80 with the approval of the University Senate .
Over the years, necessary changes were made in the academic curriculum in order to make the programme more relevant to the needs of the society. Significant among such changes are the introduction of General Studies Courses; Computer Programming; Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES); Entrepreneurship; Water Resources and Environmental Engineering etc. With the advent of the National Universities Commission (NUC) benchmarks for minimum credit load and course content for Nigerian Universities, the Department complied as required in the curriculum. The current programme lays more emphasis on civil engineering courses from the 300-Level. The department is working towards updating the academic programme to meet the ever changing need of the society. Our new programme is currently with the curriculum approval committee of the University senate.
Admission Requirements
The Department offers four and five year programmes leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree. The five-year programme is designed for students entering the University with equivalents of the Senior School Certificate (SSC) or WASCE or NECO or General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level with at least five credits, which must include Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and English Language. Candidates with passes inPhysics and Mathematics in Higher School Certificate and have obtained a credit in Chemistry at Ordinary level may be admitted into the four-year programme.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
Ph.D Research
The Ph.D. degree is mainly by research under the guidance of an approved supervisor. The candidate is required to make three seminar presentations in three stages as follows:
(i) Proposal: Having carefully selected a research topic in collaboration with an approved supervisor following a comprehensive literature review and having articulated appropriate research methodology, a Ph.D candidate is required to make a formal presentation of his research proposal to the Departmental Postgraduate Board. Usually, corrections and amendments are made to the title or methodology by the Board before the candidate is allowed to carry on with the proposed research.
(ii) Internal Defense: Having successfully accomplished to objectives of the research as enumerated during the proposal, the candidate is required to make a second formal presentation of his findings to the Departmental Postgraduate Board. If the research work is approved, the candidate will be authorized to make a comprehensive report of the research to form a Ph.D thesis. The standard of quality of work expected of a Ph.D. student is explained under the course description section.
(iii) Oral Examination: After a successful defense, the candidate will then be examined by an External Examiner who is usually a professor and a staff of another university.
Compulsory Courses
Compulsory courses for Ph.D candidates have been introduced to enable the candidates produce better Ph.D thesis and also to equip them with skills necessary for obtaining research grants.
