4th Biennial National Conference of Music and the Performing Arts (NACOMPA) 2017

May 29 – 31, 2017

THEME: MUSICAL PLURALITY AND THE NIGERIAN POLITY

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

Rationale

At the dawn of the 21st century, the argument for the primacy of the so-called serious music has come under a heavy attack. As opinions on meaning and value of music diverge sharply, a compromise is reached; that instead of a unitary global typology, there is a plurality of discrete music types that constantly engage stakeholders in musical creativity, performances, research, education, technology, polemics, and even governance. Within the known categories of folk, popular, art, and World Music exist a striking multiplicity of music genres and sub-genres that define the extent and ‘borders’ of today’s musical plurality. Expressions and studies in musical diversity are pursued within the real and virtual spaces provided and regulated by sovereign states and their agents. This conference is aimed at grilling the features and dynamics of musical plurality and how they affect the educational, professional, socio-cultural, and economic lives within the Nigerian political boundaries.

The Music and Performing Arts Conference is planned to address these and related issues under the following sub-themes:

  • The relevance of the notion of plurality to the study of musical arts in Nigeria
  • Social mediation, dissemination, distribution, and marketing of musical products in Nigeria
  • Music and social identities in Nigeria
  • Considerations of gendered and sexual identities within production, distribution, and consumption of music in Nigeria
  • Unionism, associations, and NGOs in Nigerian musical practices
  • Musical creativity and intellectual property legislation in Nigeria
  • Public performance and broadcasting of musical works in Nigeria
  • Musical creativity and politics of state governance in Nigeria
  • Ethical issues in musical performance, research, and business in Nigeria
  • Interdisciplinary relations between music and the arts in Nigeria
  • Interdisciplinary relations between music and the sciences in Nigeria
  • Political activism, issues of heritage, and stereotyping within the musical arts in Nigeria
  • Musical creativity and spiritual/religious relations in Nigeria
  • Styles, genres, symbolism, and the paradigm of performance in Nigerian music
  • Globalization and Nigerian Music

Other sub-themes relating to the main conference theme may be added.
