4th Biennial National Conference of Music and the Performing Arts (NACOMPA) 2017 May 29 – 31, 2017
DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
FACULTY OF ARTS
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA
4th Biennial National Conference of Music and the Performing Arts (NACOMPA) 2017
May 29 – 31, 2017
THEME: MUSICAL PLURALITY AND THE NIGERIAN POLITY
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Rationale
At the dawn of the 21st century, the argument for the primacy of the so-called serious music has come under a heavy attack. As opinions on meaning and value of music diverge sharply, a compromise is reached; that instead of a unitary global typology, there is a plurality of discrete music types that constantly engage stakeholders in musical creativity, performances, research, education, technology, polemics, and even governance. Within the known categories of folk, popular, art, and World Music exist a striking multiplicity of music genres and sub-genres that define the extent and ‘borders’ of today’s musical plurality. Expressions and studies in musical diversity are pursued within the real and virtual spaces provided and regulated by sovereign states and their agents. This conference is aimed at grilling the features and dynamics of musical plurality and how they affect the educational, professional, socio-cultural, and economic lives within the Nigerian political boundaries.
The Music and Performing Arts Conference is planned to address these and related issues under the following sub-themes:
- The relevance of the notion of plurality to the study of musical arts in Nigeria
- Social mediation, dissemination, distribution, and marketing of musical products in Nigeria
- Music and social identities in Nigeria
- Considerations of gendered and sexual identities within production, distribution, and consumption of music in Nigeria
- Unionism, associations, and NGOs in Nigerian musical practices
- Musical creativity and intellectual property legislation in Nigeria
- Public performance and broadcasting of musical works in Nigeria
- Musical creativity and politics of state governance in Nigeria
- Ethical issues in musical performance, research, and business in Nigeria
- Interdisciplinary relations between music and the arts in Nigeria
- Interdisciplinary relations between music and the sciences in Nigeria
- Political activism, issues of heritage, and stereotyping within the musical arts in Nigeria
- Musical creativity and spiritual/religious relations in Nigeria
- Styles, genres, symbolism, and the paradigm of performance in Nigerian music
- Globalization and Nigerian Music
Other sub-themes relating to the main conference theme may be added.
The conference will include plenary, paper presentations, workshops, symposia, poster presentations and concerts that fall within the overall theme. Those wishing to present papers, workshops, posters or lecture-demonstrations should submit a 200-word abstract, clearly articulating which sub-theme the submission falls under. This must be accompanied by a short CV of the presenters to nacompa.unn@gmail.com or music.unn@unn.edu.ng to be received not later than 21st April, 2017. This date is crucial as abstracts will need to be reviewed for publication. Accepted and acknowledged abstracts shall be published in the book of abstracts.
Submission format: All submissions must be in MS Word. Abstracts and Full papers are to be submitted as attachments to nacompa.unn@gmail.com or music.unn@unn.edu.ng. All presentations must be in Power Point. All full papers must not be less than fifteen (15) double line-spaced pages, in Times New Roman, font size 12. The reference style is APA (6th edition). Those interested in the planned conference performance are to submit their names to the Chair of the Conference Organizing Group not later than 21st April, 2017.
Conference fee: N12,000.00
