THEME

CLIMATE CHANGE, DISEASE PANDEMIC AND INSECURITY: THE GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE

20TH — 24TH SEPTEMBER 2022

INTRODUCTION

The Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic has had huge impacts on public health systems, society, food systems, education, and economies and has led to massive transformations in the way we live and work. On the other hand, climate change has remained a major challenge to development across the world. However, when the challenges of Climate change are exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and pervasive insecurity, the precariousness of lives and livelihoods as well as human existence on the earth’s surface become heightened. Thus, overcoming these challenges requires targeted and sustained efforts and innovations and lifestyle changes to guarantee the survival of humans.

In the light of this, the Head, Staff and Students of the Department of Geography, University of Nigeria, Nsukka cordially invite Researchers, Industry Practitioners, Development Agencies, Government MDAs, Postgraduate Students, Academic Community Geographers and the general public to the 62nd Annual National Conference of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) to be hosted by the Department of Geography, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Special Visit to the Dean, Faculty of Education by the SUG Senate President, ESA President and other Functionaries
On February 22, 2022 (22.2.22), the Students’ Union Government (SUG) officials who are in the Faculty of Education paid a visit to the multi-capacity faculty Dean, Prof. Joshua E. Umeifekwem and his Associate Dean, Dr. Ken Chukwuemeka Obetta who both welcomed them like a father would his children.
The SUG Senate President, Dist. Sen. Odom Joseph who led the team acknowledged the efforts of the Dean and commended him for pioneering many projects (like the ultramodern faculty building, toilet and restoration of the faculty light) in the faculty and leading an exemplary administration. He further stated that his positive leadership qualities and humility has really put him in the best position to advise the SUG Comrades as they continue in their own leadership for the good of the students.
Adding to the Senate President’s remark, the Faculty President, Comr. Eze Sunday, restated his willingness to keep working in good synergy with the Faculty Administration, while commending the Dean for his open-door policy and friendly nature, especially towards the students’ leaders overtime.
Among those that went for the visit alongside the Senate President are Comr. Okolo Chibuzor Santos (SUG Secretary General), Hon. Pascal (SUG HOR), Hon. Anastasia (SUG HOR), Sen. Adim MaryJane (SUG Senate), Sen. Chimaobi (SUG Senate), Sen. Hero (SUG Senate), and Comr. Aneke Cyriacus Saneke (Founder, Pen-Power Foundation).

BACKGROUND

Africa has enormous potentials, given the human and material resources the continent is endowed with. The demographic composition of the continent is an asset, with the youth constituting over 60% of the continent’s population. As of 2015, Africa accounted for 19% of total youth population in the world and is projected to account for 42% of world’s youth population by 2030. The teeming youth population implies that the continent would harness demographic dividends, if it invests in the youth.

What is more? Sixty percent of world’s arable land is in Africa. Yet, the continent remains a net importer of food and afflicted by hunger, disease and poverty. Africa is home to the largest number of poor people, accounting for two-thirds of the world’s extreme poor population. As of 2018, an estimated 433 million (or 40 percent) of Africans live below the US$1.90-a-day poverty line.

The situation of youth unemployment, hunger and poverty interacts with violent conflict and governance deficit across the continent, making the problem complex and grossly undermining the possibilities of African development. The 2020 Index of African Governance revealed that in 2019 the African average governance score declined for the first time over the decade. The report notes that “countries have shown concerning declines in Participation, Rights & Inclusion (-1.4) and Security & Rule of Law (-0.7). Here, a deteriorating security situation and an increasingly precarious environment for human rights and civic participation are the primary drivers.”

Meanwhile, with an estimated population of size of 2 billion by 2050, and contemporary challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which have further weakened fragile economies and retrogressed development in some sectors, there is the need to bring to the front burner conversation on the path to self-sufficiency for African countries, increased competiveness of African economies and strategies for home grown development that would translate to the Africa We Want by 2063.

Various continental initiatives have been enunciated to address the complex challenges facing Africa and put the continent on the path of self-sufficiency while also making its economy competitive in the global political economy. More recently the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) was launched by Africans. The AfCFTA is said to be the largest trade agreement to take effect since the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Experts argue that AfCFTA holds tremendous potentials for Africa’s development. For instance, it is estimated that implementing the AfCFTA will increase the volume of intra-African trade by 81% by 2035, and increase the volume of total African exports by29%. Similarly, in January 2015, the Africa Agenda 2063 – The Africa We Want, was adopted as the basis for Africa’s long-term socio-economic and integrative transformation. The Agenda 2063 is in line with the Pan African vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force in the international arena to which the African Union (AU) rededicated herself on the occasion of the golden jubilee in May 2013.

However, the key questions remain inter alia: What are the threats to actualization in the Africa we want and the potentials of AfCFTA? How can Africa utilize existing continental platforms and agreements as springboards for actualization of self-sufficient, competitive economy with homegrown development?

SUB-THEMES/TRACKS

Against this backdrop, the IDS2022 International Conference aims to gather over 300 eminent scholars, academics, practitioners, operators of civil society organizations, and policy makers on the following Sub-themes/Tracks:

  1. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement as a vehicle for economic development in Africa.
  2. Opportunities and threats to actualization of the Africa Agenda 2063.
  3. Tapping the emerging technologies to actualize the Africa Agenda 2063
  4. COVID-19 Pandemic and the Africa we want: Implications, threats and opportunities.
  5. Rethinking the challenge of regional integration to Africa’s development.
  6. Good financial governance (GfG) and Africa’s development.
  7. Illicit financial flows (IFFs) and the challenge of insecurity in Africa.
  8. The potentials of women and young people in Africa’s development.
  9. South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSC/TRC) and its importance to Africa’s development.
  10. Governance deficit, violent conflicts and self-sufficiency in Africa.

Summary of Faculty of Education Lecture Series

On Tuesday 25th, a maiden lecture series was organized by our dear Faculty of Education of this noble university. During his opening speech, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles A. Igwe ably represented by his Deputy (Administration/Academics), Prof. Okpoko commended the novel, all important and timely event and stated that other faculties should borrow leaf from this commendable event. The Dean of the faculty, Prof. Joshua. E. Umeifekwem on his welcome address also said the maiden edition of the lecture series with its topic: “Ageing and Dying in Contemporary Nigeria” was deemed necessary at a time like this, when people do not want to think about the obvious which is ageing and dying. Again, he reiterated the need of revamping the spirit of academic scholasticism in our Faculty which has eluded us for so long. During the lecture, Prof. O. C. Eneh in his introduction stated that Death and dying are inevitable parts of ageing, whether it is personal or of our loved ones. Noting an increasing interest in gerontology (physical, mental and societal implications of ageing) and thanatology (the scientific study and practice of death), he exposed the audience to the meaning of ageing and dying, the need for and tips on achieving graceful and successful ageing; among which he discussed stress and health management, planning ahead of time, having enough sleep and rest, regular check-ups.

While concluding, the Lecturer stressed on the observed reluctance on the part of Nigerians with issues regarding ageing and death which makes them shy away from discussing and preparing for it. He warns that everyone should take the issue seriously and prepare for it, so as not to be taken unaware; more so, since it comes with its attendant deterioration of the bone, tissues and other vital organs. He further advice all and sundry, especially the ageing, to engage in proper feeding, daily exercises, proper health management, regular check-ups with their doctors and above all, maintain stress-free environment to increase longevity.
