DRUG DELIVERY AND NANOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH UNIT (RUNDD)

Preamble

In a genuine effort, and as part of our effort to reposition research in the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology & Industrial Pharmacy, the Head of department, Prof. S.I. Ofoefule initiated the formation of a Research unit in the field of Drug Delivery and Nanotechnology to be based in the department of Pharmaceutical Technology & Industrial Pharmacy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The membership of the research unit is open to all researchers whose interest is in the aforementioned areas and who are either staff of the department or are affiliated to the department either as colleagues or as post graduate students.

  1. Name of Research group:

The research group shall be known and referred to as Drug Delivery and Nanotechnology Research Unit (RUNDD).

  1. Research Focus:

Research focus of RUNDD is on Nanotechnology and Drug Delivery systems, design and performance including targeted drug delivery.

  1. Missions:

The mission of RUNDD is to:

  • contribute significantly to knowledge in the field of drug delivery and dosage form development.
  • advance research in the field of emerging and novel drug delivery systems such as controlled drug delivery, drug targeting, nanotechnology and other lipid based drug delivery systems
  • develop new and effective dosage forms of existing drugs for potential investors.
  1. Organization:

RUNDD is organized into the following complementary themes:

  • pharmaceutical excipient development and functionality
  • controlled drug delivery using polymeric and biodegradable materials
  • targeted drug delivery via microencapsulation, bioadhesion, nanoparticles, liposomes and other lipid based systems.
  • drug development projects with focus on anticancer, antimalarial, antihypertensive, antidiabetic and antituberculous agents
  • phytomedicines research and phyto-pharmaceutical formulations


 

  1. Composition of RUNDD:

RUNDD is composed of the following at inception on October 02, 2014

Membership is strictly voluntary and intending members (staff and PG students) must meet the criteria stipulated in items 4 and 6 in the membership application form. Application forms are available from the Group secretary.

Members should possess

  • Research initiatives
  • Have bend for translational research
  • Possess grant proposal writing capabilities
  1. Collaboration

RUNDD is in collaboration with Nanomedicine and Biophysical Drug Delivery unit of National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Abuja.

  1. Funding

RUNDD shall seek funding through research grounds from research grant awarding bodies/foundation (e.g. Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, Ford foundation, McArthur Foundation etc.) in and outside the country, co-operate bodies and Pharmaceutical/Pharmaceutical based organizations and donor agencies.

  1. Outcomes

Research outcomes shall be published in reputable impact factor and international journals with Principal investigator/initiator being the lead author. Any inventions shall be patented.
