TELECOMMUNICATION RESEARCH GROUP

The Telecommunication group is resident in the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria Nsukka. All the members are departmental academic staff.

RESEARCH FOCUS

The group has a general research focus that is within Communication Engineering specialized area. The primary objectives of this group include:

  1. Understanding and competently analyzing the ever evolving telecommunication technologies.
  2. Adapting the technologies to the local environment.
  3. Bringing in satisfactory local content into the area of telecommunication engineering through development or implementation of local telecommunication specialized software and hardware.
  4. Forging inter-disciplinary collaboration to build robust foundation for industry-University collaborations intended to provide solutions to industry based research problems.

Currently, the group is focusing its research activities on telecommunication performance issues, design and development of telecommunication related domestic appliances or devices. Specifically, these include:

  1. Design and development of telecommunication spectrum management system that has the capability to monitor spectrum on wire or wireless communication networks.
  2. Design and development of remote home appliances control system.
  3. Design and development of a satellite signal booster.

ANI, Cosmas Ikechukwu (Professor)

Brief biography

ANI, Cosmas Ikechukwu is a Professor of Communication Networks Engineering. He obtained his first and second degrees from the former USSR (Moscow) in Automated Telecommunication. He further studied in Sussex University in UK and obtained MPhil degree in Computer Communication and Networks. He obtained PhD degree from the University of Wales, UK in Communication Networks. His current research interest is in the area of Communication Networks Performance Management – Resource Management in both wire and wireless networks. He developed a Rare Event Probability Simulation Modeling Tool. He also developed ATM Network Resource Allocation Template. Professor Ani developed a Corporate Network Backbone Capacity Sizing Scheme for Nigerian networks. Currently he is working on the development of Integrated ATM Network Performance Management System. Also he is developing a template for the allocation of radio resources for GSM Networks – handover resource reservation inclusive. He is author of several journal and conference articles in this area. He supervises research students at both Masters and Doctoral levels. He is currently, the departmental Postgraduate Programme Coordinator.

Professor Ani teaches courses in Telecommunication Networks Engineering such as Communication Theory; Communication Networks and Protocols; Communication Network Traffic Control; Network Modeling and Simulation. He has good administrative experience which was obtained from Faculty Associate Deanship and Departmental Headship. He is currently, the coordinator ETF Centre for Telecommunication Networking.

Professor Ani has been a member of National (Nigeria) Expert Committee on Spectrum Management sponsored by Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Abuja, Nigeria. He has worked in several occasions as a consultant to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Ejeba, Warri, Nigeria on Telecommunication Corporate Training under Bit Streams Company Ltd. He also functioned as a consultant to both NCC and Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Abuja, Nigeria on Telecommunication Corporate Training. He is member of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Journals’ editorial boards. He is a member of National Expert Research Group on Wireless Communication.

 

                                                                                                                                          

AHANEKU, Mamilus Aginwa (Senior Lecturer)

Brief biography

AHANEKU, Mamilus Aginwa was born in 1960. He is married to Mrs. Veronica Ahaneku (nee Dike), with five children. He has B.Eng. Electrical/Electronic Engineering, MSc , Ph.D in Communications Engineering. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Some of the professional skills acquired include: Auto-CAD Essentials, Autodesk inventor 2008 Essential, and Programming using MATLAB codes. He received the Most Punctual Lecturer Award in 2012 from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka during one of the biannual Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture series. He is a Member, Board of Maritime Institute of Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Member, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Education Foundation Committee for Indigent Students, Faculty of Engineering, UNN. He has also published papers in both national and International journals.

Research Interests include: FM Threshold and Methods of Limiting its Effect on performance, Equipment Grafting in Telecommunication Industry, A Survey of Intelligent Cells and their Applications in Cellular Systems, Comparative analysis Current IPV4 Allocation Scheme of Network on Chip, Power Capacity of Transmission Line, The Limitations of campus wireless Networks, GSM Base Stations Radiation Level, Frequency re-use and implications on limited network resources in cellular mobile systems, Concepts to increase the robustness of radio systems to enhance spectrum usage, and possibilities of transmitting error-free signals in a noisy channel, etc.

 

EZEJA, Michael Obinna, was born on 25th October, 1978, in Kogi State. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2007 and subsequently a Master’s Degree in Communications Engineering from the same department in 2011. He is currently in a PhD research work in Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His current research interest is Development of Enhanced Mechanism for Handover in LTE Networks.

 

DURU, Chinedu was born on the 20th July 1982 and is from Onuimo L.G.A, Imo state. He obtained his B.S in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University (USA); an M.Sc in Communication Engineering from The University of Manchester (UK); and a second M.Sc in Communication Network Planning and Management from The University of Portsmouth (UK). He has strong educational and technical background in both the hardware and software areas of ICT. His areas of interest include Wireless Sensor Networks, Robotics, Network Design and Planning, Network & Systems Administration, Wireless Power Transfer, and Electronic Amplifiers.

 

ANIOKE, Linda Chidera was born on September, 1986 in Port Harcourt Rivers State. She is a Graduate Assistant and a postgraduate student of the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State. She received a Bachelor in Engineering Degree from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in 2009 where she graduated with a First Class Honours in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (Communication option). She has also completed a Master’s Degree course in Communication Engineering en-route to PhD at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State. Her research specialty is capacity optimization and resource allocation for wireless and broadband systems.

 

NNAMANI, Christantus Obinna was born on the 26th day of September, 1987 in Agbani, Nkanu West L.G.A. of Enugu State. He is a Graduate Assistant and a postgraduate student of the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State. He received a Bachelor in Engineering Degree (Electronic Engineering) from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State in 2011 where he graduated with a Second Class Honours (Upper Division). He has completed a Master’s Degree course in Communication Engineering en-route to PhD at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State. His current research interests are resource allocation in 4th generation of mobile communication systems and Network Simulation and Modeling.
