Breast and Prostate Cancer Awareness and Screening Initiative (BPCASI) Research Group

Name of the Research Group:   Breast and Prostate Cancer Awareness and Screening Initiative (BPCASI) Research Group.
Research Concept:  Breast and prostate cancer problems have serious public health concerns as both the rich and the poor can be equally affected. Most importantly, there is high incidence of breast and prostate cancer cases nowadays in Nigeria and other developing countries worldwide. The level of awareness and incidence of breast and prostate lesions among our teeming population in Nigeria especially the rural dwellers is poorly documented.  Hitherto, breast and prostate cancers are by far the commonest causes of cancer deaths among females and males respectively in Nigeria. Although the aetiology of breast and prostate cancers are unknown, many factors such as familial predisposition, diet, race, radiation exposure, life styles etc have been implicated. Ignorance of these risk factors and inability to present early for screening at the asymptomatic stage pose serious challenge to the management of these cancer issues. It is therefore important to carry out extensive research investigations on the awareness of breast and prostate cancers and early screening for these cancers among the vulnerable population groups in our environment.
Research Focus: This initiative group will focus mainly on health awareness campaign on breast and prostate cancers in our locality. The research group will focus on the following:
1. To determine the level of awareness of breast self examinations for possible  breast lesions among women aged 18 years and above in rural and urban communities in Enugu state;
2. To determine the level of awareness of prostate cancer screening for prostate lesions among men aged 35 years and above in rural and urban communities in Enugu state;
3. To screen symptomatic women aged 35 years and above for breast lesions by mammography and sonomammography;
4. To screen symptomatic men aged 35 years and above for prostate lesions by sonography;
5. To carry out further relevant laboratory investigations on patients with radiologically detectable breast and prostate lesions for convergent validity.
6. To ascertain the incidence and prevalence of some breast and prostate lesions in our locality.
7. To enlighten the public through public health education and publications of our research findings.
Some Proposed Research Topics
1. Survey of awareness of breast self examination among women of child bearing age in a Nigerian population.
2. Survey of incidence of breast lesions among adult women in a Nigerian population.
3. Correlation between radiologically detectable breast lesions with histological diagnosis in a Nigerian population.
4. Survey of awareness of routine prostate screening for early detection of prostate lesions in a Nigerian population.
5. Survey of incidence of prostate lesions among men aged 35 years and above in a Nigerian population.
6. Correlation between radiologically detectable prostate lesions with histological diagnosis in a Nigerian population.
7.  Incidence of BPH among rural dwellers in the southeast of Nigeria.
8. An audit of cancer screening capacity of general hospitals in the southeast region of Nigeria.
9. Awareness and attitude of rural women  to breast Cancer screening.
10.  Attitude of educated women to self breast examination in southeast Nigeria.
11.  Investigation of the survival rates of breast cancer patients simultaneously managed with Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy.
