RESEARCH GROUP PROPOSAL

JUSTIFICATION

Medical education in Africa today is at its lowest ebb compared to other developed continents. The quality of the health care system in any part of the world cannot be separated from the quality of the training and empowerment given to the operators.  Common in most developing countries (Africa not being an exception) is the poor education systems in operation. This research group is formed to investigate and provide effective solutions to the challenges of medical education   in Nigeria.

STATEMENT OF INTENT

Amongst the goals of this research group are

  1. Investigation of basic problems peculiar to the training of medical students in Nigeria.
  2. Investigation of the challenges of application of current trends of teaching and learning in medical education in
  3. Organize researches geared toward improving present teaching methodologies in the various levels of medical training.
  4. Organize researches that are focused on improving the content , quality and effectiveness and relevance of the curriculum.
  5. Identify some of the social, cultural and economic practices that are detrimental to the delivery of quality medical education.

  1. Personal Statement

I am a Medical Doctor, Physiologist and Public Health Specialist with interest in Health Research that can improve Nigeria’s poor health indices. My research interest presently revolves on Improving   Maternal health outcomes. I was recently in Medical University of Graz Austria as part of an Austrian National project on changes in endothelial function among women in different phases of Menstrual cycle. I am also a recipient of the 2012 Research Recognition Award of the prestigious American Physiological Society. In my institution, I have attracted Partnerships with different organizations for Research bordering on maternal health as the Director of the Directorate of Research and Publication. I consult for UK Agency for International development and USAID assisted Health programs in Enugu State of Nigeria. I am presently an Associate Professor at leading the College of Medicine of  University of Nigeria Enugu campus.

I believe that within the limited time of an individual’s existence, one must strive to achieve excellence in life through hard work. I am committed to contributing my time and resources towards  improving Maternal and Child health in Nigeria
