This scheme enables researchers to undertake humanities or social science Master’s courses in any area of health.

Who can apply

You can apply for a Master’s Award if you want to develop humanities or social science research skills and train in any area of health. You must have sponsorship from an eligible host organisation in the UK, Republic of Ireland or a low- or middle-income country.

You should usually have at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. You can apply for a Master’s Award before you graduate, but you must have obtained your degree before taking up the award.

Who can’t apply

You can’t apply if you’ve:

  • received support for your postgraduate studies from another funding body
  • begun a Master’s course.

Scheme finder

A Master’s Award is for one year. Support includes:

  • You’ll get a stipend based on our studentship stipend scale:

    • £14,940 if you’re based outside London
    • £16,709 if you’re based in London
  • We usually provide funds at the level charged to UK/EU students, rather than the overseas student rate (with the exception of applicants who are from low- and middle-income countries (opens in a new tab)).

What we don’t offer

We don’t provide funds for directly allocated or indirect costs unless they’re included on this page.

Stages of application

  1. Contact a university department

    Register your interest with a university in the UK, Republic of Ireland or a low- or middle-income country that has a suitable Master’s programme.

  2. University nominates one candidate to the Trust

    Each university can put forward one candidate for a Master’s Award.The candidate’s name and email address should be sent to grantenquiries@wellcome.ac.uk.

    We’ll then invite you to submit a full application.

  3. Decision

    We’ll tell you our decision by the end of June.

This is an annual competition. We don’t accept late applications.
