Philosophy
Home Science (Home Economics) as a profession is a field of study that evolved out of the concern for the home (family) raised by the conditions of the society becoming increasingly dominated by commercial and industrial interests. It is concerned with ways in which the quality and content of family life can be enhanced maximally through optimum utilization of its human and material resources. It is an applied field of study that brings together knowledge and skills from different disciplines within the pure and applied arts and sciences to solve the most pressing problems that challenge the families presently, as well as those that are possibly going to emerge in the future. The field of Home Science has developed tremendously within the last few decades in both its outreach and its depth of penetration in order to meet the dynamic nature of the problems and challenges of individuals, families and societies. This is as a result of the developments in science and technology, all of which have affected living conditions of individuals, families and the society at large.
Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
1. train students in the development, use and management of human and material resources required to foster various aspect of individual, family and national development.
2. develop the latent potentials of students and enable them to take up leadership positions and become professionals in public and private establishments related to their chosen areas of study.
3 equip students with entrepreneurial skills needed to create small to medium scale businesses in the three areas of the curriculum.
Scope
Early in the programme students are exposed to courses in social sciences, physical sciences, arts and agriculture in order to meet the challenging needs of the society and encourage entrepreneurship. In the final year, students have the option to major in any of the three areas:
Food, Nutrition and Institutional Management
Textile, Clothing and Fashion Design and
Family and Child Studies

UTME Entry Requirements
To be admitted into the 4 year B.Sc. Programme, the candidate must have the University general entry requirements, which include pass at credit level in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) or the National Examination Commission (NECO), or the General Certificate in Education Ordinary Level (GCE O/L) in five subjects including an approved science subject obtained at not more than two sittings. In addition to the general University entry requirements, candidates must have obtained credits in the SSSCE or GCE O/L equivalent and NECO in Chemistry, Biology or Food and Nutrition or Agricultural Science. A pass in Mathematics/Physics is acceptable.
Direct Entry Requirements
Matriculation requirement in the relevant subject plus advanced level passes in Chemistry and Biology (Botany or Zoology). National Diplomas and other acceptable/recognized Diplomas holders with credit passes in Biology or Agricultural Science and Chemistry may be admitted into year one of the degree programme. Higher Diplomas or NCE in Home Economics or any other related area with credit passes in Biology or Agricultural Science and Home Economics may be admitted into the second year programme.
B.Sc. NUTRITION AND DIETETICS
Philosophy
Human Nutrition as a science deals with the foods which the human organism requires, how he utilizes them and how he deals with the waste products due to its activities. Dietetics, on the other hand, is the application of scientific principles of nutrition to human subjects in health and disease conditions. The student of Nutrition and Dietetics is thus engaged in a broad multidisciplinary study bridging the gap between the areas of food science, applied medical science and management studies.
Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to ensure that students:
1. Understand the inter-relationship among agriculture, food and nutrition as well as how they relate to health
2. Understand the nutritional values of locally available foods and appreciate the function of the different constituents, nutrients, their interaction and possible toxic effects of non-nutrient constituents.
3. Can assess the main nutritional problems in a community; appreciate the causes and severity of malnutrition in a community and design intervention for their solution.
4. Plan and formulate adequate diets in health and diseases for all the groups and population types.
5. Appreciate the effects of processing methods on the nutritive value of food and apply these techniques to improve the quality of local food resources in order to meet nutritional needs of the individuals, community and population at large.
6. Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate nutrition programmes and
7. Have a global view of the problems of malnutrition and agencies involved in solving the problem, especially in Africa.
Scope
The programme commences with a study of the relevant branches of the natural and management sciences, which form the basis of a coordinated sequence of applied course offered in the penultimate and final years. An essential aspect of this course is the opportunity provided for students to gain direct practical experience during periods of industrial training (IT) in the food industries, hotels, hospitals, research centers, corporate organizations and agencies.

Direct Entry Requirements
Candidates must have passes at the principal level in the Higher School Certificate Examination or equivalent passes at the GCE Advanced Level in two of the following subjects:- Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology), Agricultural Science, Physics or Mathematics. Candidates with Certificate in Nursing or Diplomas in relevant subjects may be offered admission by direct entry. In addition to the Departmental requirements, the candidate must also satisfy the UTME entry requirements.
