Light microscope studies showed that Meloidogyne hapla biotype developed within corn root tissue. Although giant cell development occurred mainly in the stele, there was the rare case of giant cell formation in the cortex. Giant cells contained several nuclei, either scattered or in clusters; cytoplasm of the giant cells was dense and cell walls thickened.
