Professor Adegboyega Adebayo Karim, fsi+, FCILT, FICCON, FIDMSS, FSPSP, is a distinguished scholar, accomplished security strategist, renowned administrator, and respected public servant whose career has been defined by excellence, integrity, leadership, and service to humanity.

Born on 11 June 1964, Professor Karim received his early education at Ereko Methodist Primary School, Awori Anglican Comprehensive High School, Ipaja, and Government College, Ketu-Epe, Lagos State. He thereafter attended the Federal School of Arts and Science, Lagos, before obtaining a Bachelor of Science (Education) degree in Chemistry from the University of Lagos in 1986.

His passion for knowledge and professional development propelled him to pursue advanced studies, earning a Master of Science degree in Transport Studies from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye; a Master of Arts degree in Peace and Security Studies from the University of Ilorin; and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Peace and Development Studies from the same university, where he emerged as the pioneer doctoral graduate of the programme.

Following his National Youth Service at Nkporo Comprehensive Secondary School in present-day Abia State, Professor Karim joined the Department of State Services (DSS) in 1987 as a Cadet Officer and a member of the pioneer set of senior cadet officers of the Service. Through diligence, professional competence, loyalty, and exemplary leadership, he rose steadily through the ranks to attain the prestigious position of Assistant Director-General. During his distinguished career, he served in various operational commands, intelligence formations, training institutions, and strategic leadership positions, contributing significantly to the strengthening of Nigeria’s national security architecture.

Professor Karim is widely acknowledged as one of Nigeria’s leading authorities in peace and conflict studies, security management, intelligence, and national development. A prolific scholar, he has authored and co-authored over one hundred scholarly publications, including books, monographs, technical reports, and articles in reputable national and international journals. His research interests span peacebuilding, conflict resolution, counter-terrorism, insurgency, electoral security, human security, alternative dispute resolution, governance, and transnational crime.

His academic and professional engagements have taken him across Africa, Europe, and Asia, where he has participated in numerous international conferences, study programmes, policy dialogues, and strategic engagements on issues relating to governance, economic development, migration, climate change, artificial intelligence, regional integration, and sustainable development.

A respected intellectual and professional, Professor Karim is a Fellow of the National Institute for Security Studies (fsi+), the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT), the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON), the Institute of Disaster Management and Safety Science (FIDMSS), and the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (FSPSP), among other professional associations.

His outstanding contributions to scholarship, security administration, public service, and national development have earned him numerous honours, awards, commendations, and recognitions from professional bodies, academic institutions, government agencies, and community organizations.

Prior to his retirement from the Department of State Services, Professor Karim served as Director of Research, Estimates and Library Services and Head of the Postgraduate School of the National Institute for Security Studies, Abuja. He currently serves as Dean of the African School of Economics, Abuja, where he continues to provide intellectual leadership and contribute to the development of future generations of scholars and policy professionals.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Karim is a devoted family man and community leader. He is married to Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State. Their union reflects a shared commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service. In recognition of his exemplary character, contributions to community development, and commitment to the advancement of his people, he was conferred with the prestigious traditional title of Fiwasaye of Oyan City, Osun State, a distinction that reflects the high regard in which he is held by his community and beyond.

Professor Adegboyega Adebayo Karim embodies the ideals of scholarship, patriotism, visionary leadership, and selfless service. His wealth of experience in academia, public administration, security management, and institutional leadership eminently qualifies him for the responsibility of providing strategic direction as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
