Applied Microbiology and Environmental Biotechnology (AMEB) Research Group

Main Research Focus: Environmental restoration and sustainability; Microbial/molecular ecology and evolution; Biodiversity of soil and water microbes; Bioremediation and waste management; Microbe-metal interactions; Antibiotic resistance; Climate change

Title of most recent research project: Biodegradation of atrazine in contaminated soil, using biochar and poultry manure as amendments.

Other current or completed research projects:

  1. Antibiotic resistant gene profile and mobility in selected enterobacteria associated with

effluents from sewage treatment plants, hospitals and factory farms

  1. Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial uropathogens

among pregnant women with urinary tract infection in Nigeria.

  1. Keratinolytic potentials of microorganisms isolated from abattoir waste dumps in Enugu

metropolis, Enugu State, Nigeria.

  1. Bioaugmentation with microbial isolates obtained from petroleum-contaminated soils in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria.
  2. Identification of important properties for adaptation of soil bacteria in herbicide contaminated soil
  3. Engineering the plant microbiome to enhance plant growth through improving phosphorus nutrition.
  4. Mechanism of heavy metal remediation and plant growth promotion by nitrifying bacteria
