PROFESSOR ANTHONY A. ATTAMA FAS

Anthony Amaechi Attama is a Professor of Pharmaceutics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka since 2009, where he currently holds the position of the Director, Academic Planning. He was a former Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and former Director, Education Innovation Unit of the University and the former Director, Institute for Drug, Herbal Medicine and Excipient Research and Development of the University. Prof. Attama was also the former Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Agbani, Enugu State and State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, Enugu State respectively. Prof. Attama has research focus on novel drug delivery systems that has attracted many research grants and awards. He was a visiting Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and an alumnus of DAAD, Germany. His postdoctoral programme in Germany resulted in a grant to start a nanomedicines laboratory in Nigeria in 2008. He has developed novel methods of enhancing drug incorporation in lipid nanoparticles involving mixed crystals and mixtures of crystals using natural biodegradable lipids which have resulted in the development of several nanomedicines for malaria and other diseases, including recent formulations patented in Australia and Nigeria. He has locally developed a novel ex vivo method and modified an equation for assessing the mucoadhesive properties of drug formulations. Prof. Attama has successfully supervised 32 PhD and 43 masters degree students in pharmaceutical sciences. He has 354 publications in research articles and book chapters, and a Google Scholar Citation of 7667, h-index 41 and i10-index 143. He has served as external examiner and assessor for more than twelve (12) universities worldwide and is on the Editorial Board of more than nine (9) journals. Prof. Attama is currently the Editor-in-Chief of African Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Nigeria. He is an alumnus of Global Young Faculty (GYF I, 2009-2011) that developed a framework for ‘Optimal Healthcare’, organised by Stiftung Mercator, Volkswagen Foundation and the University Alliance Ruhr. He is a registered pharmacist and a fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists, fellow, Nigeria Academy of Science, fellow, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and member, Institute for Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN). Prof. Attama has attended many courses including University of California San Francisco (UCSF)-Stanford Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (UCSF-Stanford CERSI) CERSI Immersion Course in Drug Discovery, Drug Development, and Regulation, and Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa PhD Supervision Course among others. Prof. Attama is married with children.
