Organization, Industry, Environment and Society Research Group

Research Focus

Social Welfare, Social Policy, African Society

Purpose/ Justification

The so-called modern (as well as the so-called postmodern) age is characterized among other things by the ubiquity of organization. Consequently, organization is evident at every level of the social system in the contemporary world, no matter how small (and informal) or how vast and intricate. To understand how the contemporary society works therefore there is need to understand perhaps, how its most universal feature operates; hence the need to study organization in all its ramifications especially in a developing society such as Nigeria. Allied to this is the need for the study and understanding of modern industry, which is the commonest form in which organization occurs in the formal realm in modern society. Within industrial organizations, most forms of work in modern society take place making the study of work and employment also essential to the understanding of modern industry and its technology, labour markets, organization and management of work, labour unions, conflict and change, etc.

Organizations necessarily operate in an environment and in a society. Therefore the association between societal well-being and environmental quality is an important issue of scientific inquiry. To that effect, this research group will in addition to the foregoing issues, explore the various forms of interaction between human society and the environment, including but not limited to the ways in which societal members perceive environmental problems, the origins of human-induced environmental decline, the relationship between population dynamics, health, and the environment, the role that elites play in harming the environment, as well as the inequitable social distribution of environmental hazards.

Goals and Objectives

  1. To work with other researchers and research groups towards creating a globally competitive and research focused University of Nigeria
  2. To contribute towards putting the University of Nigeria at the forefront of knowledge production in Africa and in the world.
  • To promote the capacity of the university of Nigeria to be a world leader in innovation, research and development, and human resource development.
  1. To engender the professional growth and development of individual members of this Research Group through engaging in regular interdisciplinary research projects and the dissemination of research results via reputable channels and outlets to the glory of the University of Nigeria.
  2. To engage in such other activities that would help to meaningfully implement the University of Nigeria Research Policy.
