  • Strengths and weakness of the journal

Strengths of the Journal

  • The journal adopts an interdisciplinary approach in its publications and draws staff from various departments and institutions in the university and outside as the need arises. As such, the journal’s publication process cannot be constrained by level of competence of its editorial board members.
  • The journal links with ministries, departments and Winrock International Institute for Rural Development for sustainability.
  • The journal is housed by the CRDC which has NUC backing as a public service unit of the University of Nigeria operating since 1982. The journal generates finances entirely authors/subscribers, donor agencies, and individual donors’ funds.

Weakness of the Journal

  • Many years of inactivity resulted in loss of important and useful contacts.
  • Successive leadership failed to catch the vision of the founder of the journal and as such could not move the journal forward.

  • Opportunities and threats of the journal

Opportunities of the Journal

  • Rural poverty is now pervasive, getting worse by the day and needs strategic interventions.
  • Funding avenues have increased and could be tapped
  • The rural sector is under – served. There are myriads of rural development issues begging for interventions.
  • The journal offers the University the best opportunity to affect the lives of the rural people in its catchment areas by providing avenues for disseminating information on rural and cooperative issues of interest.

Threats of the Journal

  • For almost one decades now the Centre managing the journal appears to have lost its premises to the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research (CEDR). As it is now, the journal has no premises to operate from.
  • The journal lacks own staff though it can draw experts/professionals from departments and units within and outside the University.
  • Due to many years of inactivity, the journal lacks seed money to resume operations.
