STATEMENT OF INTENT
HAMReG is a research group that stems directly from the department of Health Administration and Management (HAM) of the Faculty of Health Sciences & Technology, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. Its main focus is piloting research and analytical themes that borders on health systems strengthening, health economics, portfolio management in healthcare as well as Healthcare Policy and analysis. We aim to be Nigeria-centric, but can participate in the discourse that borders African-wide health in general.
We provide a meeting ground where ideas can cross-fertilize. Our team combines detailed and interdisciplinary knowledge of health systems issues together with a deep understanding of context- wide underpinnings and many years of expertise in post graduate HAM education. Our aim is to contribute to the development of knowledge and evidence for health sector reforms. The aim in all our work is to push for change by incorporating the ‘Getting Research into Policy & Practice’ rigour in every program we undertake. We hope to establish a sustainable network of partners and linkages in the near future that will provide us with yet more robust approaches to solving health systems issues.
CONCEPT BRIEF
Our Principles and Approach:
Research and Analysis: We apply detailed analysis on a range of issues; from health Inequalities to system wide integrative approaches to sustainable healthcare
Partnership: We will work closely with like-minded institutions across the continent and all over the world in networks to foster change and sustainable development
Policy Recommendations: We aim to suggest, wherever possible, policy recommendations and practical, achievable steps forwards to government; inter-government agencies, development institutions, as well as private corporations.
JUSTIFICATION BRIEF
The Nigerian Health System is very weak and was recently ranked 187 out of 191 in the world by the World Health Organization. The major bane of the Nigerian health system is lack of planning and management skills within all the three levels of the health system (primary, secondary and tertiary) and in both the private and public sectors. Developing and implementing sustainable changes in our health system demands for researched evidence-based policies and programmes.  HAMReG is well-positioned to play provide such evidence for the transformation of the Nigerian health sector.
HAMReG is emerging at the appropriate time when the sponsoring department, Department of Health Administration and Management has considerable capacity in her academic faculty of research-minded members including postgraduate (PG) students who have shown interest in health system and policy research. HAMReG will provide an incubation platform for these academic staff and PG students to develop and conduct research work for their academic growth and improvement in their research skills. HAMReG will support the academic staff of the department and students to publish academic papers in respectable journals.
