GLOBAL BEST PRACTICES IN NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND QUALITY ASSURANCE
Research Focus:
The goal is to optimize the application of current global best practices in educational assessment and quality assurance at all levels of education in Nigeria in particular and Africa in general. The total overhaul of educational evaluation system in Nigeria as was conceived in the understanding that led to the introduction of continuous assessment in Nigerian schools  is the most feasible and reliable alternative approach to repositioning Nigerian education to catalyze and sustain national development.
The continuous assessment as conceived has been bastardized and reduced to anything ranging from continuous testing to mid-term test. All the processes of education at all levels are now directed to enable learners pass prescribed examinations. Pass in the prescribed apex exam has become the sole indicator of educational accomplishment on the part of the student and of professional competence on the part of his/her teachers. Classroom activities involve learners only in listening and memorizing while the teacher does all the talking and demonstration. Unfortunately, this approach cannot engender the educational climate that supports acquisition of life skills and labour demanding competencies for successful living in a competitive global free economy.
Most developed countries have evolved unique procedures for educational assessment and quality assurance that individualizes both instruction and assessment. Individualized assessment scheme is complex and allows every learner to demonstrate his/her learning in the form he/she is most capable of. This makes possible early identification of talents and endowments in each learner for capacity building and harnessing.
The efforts of this research group will be directed towards:
 Developing workshop materials for training pre- and in-service teachers on the philosophy and skills in individualized assessment;
 Training of teachers in individualized assessment, monitoring and evaluation for quality assurance;
 Development and validation of instruments needed for individualized assessment in various school subjects across different levels of education;
 Reviewing some pertinent curricular materials for mainstreaming the innovations across levels of education and schools in Nigeria;
 Development and validation of materials and strategies for monitoring, evaluation and quality assurance in the new scheme.
