Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine

PREAMBLE/ INTRODUCTION

The Department of veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine is an approved programme in the Faculty of veterinary Medicine of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. It was carved out of the conglomerate Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Public Health in 2004. The department currently has seven (7) academic staff including two (2) that are on contact appointments and (1) who is presently on sabbatical leave in the Department, three (3) technical staff and two (2) administrative staff.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Veterinary public Health and Preventive Medicine is to advance knowledge, enhance skills and talent and make students active participants in the fight against infectious and zoonotic diseases towards adequate protection of animal and human health and assuring the availability of wholesome foods of animal origin to the society.

OBJECTIVE

To position the department for the proper training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in different areas of knowledge and research in Public Health and Preventive Medicine that are geared towards the management and control of animal diseases and for the promotion of human health, and also to render effective community based services to the immediate environment.

SCOPE

The department is involved with the training and graduating of undergraduate (DVM) and postgraduate students in the following areas of public health: food safety, epidemiology, zoonoses, biostatistics, livestock economics, jurisprudence, preventive medicine, food hygiene, environmental health and computer application in Veterinary Medicine.

Job opportunities for holders of degree in Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine are available at higher insttitutions as lecturers, in veterinary research institutions as researchers, livestock industries, health and agricultural ministries, ministry of defense, internal and police affairs, zoo and wildlife parks, food industries.

GENERAL INFORMATION

International Research Collaboration

The Department is currently in collaboration with the College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida in the area of emerging infectious diseases which has led to the training and graduating of three (3) academic staff of the department in Certificate of Emerging Infectious Diseases.Â
