Biography :

Prof. (Mrs.) Chika Nwanma Onwasigwe holds an MBBS degree from the University of Nigeria Nsukka. She is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in Community Health (FWACP) – 1994 and a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Public Health (FMCPH) – 1997. Her areas of interest are Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Medical Research.

Currently she is a Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, with effect from 1st October 2004. She has acted twice as the Head of Department of Community Medicine and Coordinator of the Master of Public Health Training Programme of the University of Nigeria.

She has successfully supervised over 400 undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students at the Master’s (over 70), Doctoral (3) and Fellowship (over 20) levels at the University of Nigeria and other universities east of the Niger. She has acted as External Examiner to various universities in south-eastern Nigeria, and an Examiner at the West African College of Physicians and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She has attended many conferences both within and outside the country. She has written three mainline university textbooks in epidemiology, biostatistics and medical research. She has published more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed local and international journals. 

She delivered the 54th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Nigeria on 22nd July 2010 titled – Disease transition in sub-Saharan Africa: the case of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.

Prof. Onwasigwe is a member of many professional and academic bodies including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nigerian Medical Association, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, International Epidemiological Association, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria and others.
