Biography :Prof. Nnamdi L. Obasi hails from Ngbo in Ohaukwu L. G. A of Ebonyi State. He started his educational career at the Premier Primary School, Onitsha, in 1982 where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate at Credit Level in 1986. He proceeded to Modebe Memorial Secondary School, Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria in 1987. Prof. Obasi holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Industrial Chemistry (1999), MSc in Inorganic Chemistry (2004) and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry (2011), all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He graduated in 1999 winning an Award for his performance at the bachelor degree level, as the best graduating student in the Department of Pure & Industrial Chemistry. Consequently, he was appointed a Graduate Assistant in 2001 after completing his National Youth service Corp. He rose through the ranks to the position of Professor in October 01, 2017. Prof. Obasi was Head, Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, University of Nigeria, Nsukka between 2018-2020. He is currently the Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Prof. Obasi received a French Embassy scholarship to Republic of Togo in 1991. He was a visiting researcher to the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow between October 2010 and March 2011. Prof. Obasi received the University of Nigeria Postgraduate Study Grant during his MSc programme in 2002/2003 session. He was an ETF scholar during his PhD programme. Prof. Obasi received the prestigious C. V. Raman Postdoctoral Fellowship for African Researchers to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India in 2013. He was also one of the invited eminent scientists by the Indian government to the Sixth Science Conclave at IIIT, Allahabad, India in 2013. Prof. Obasi has been a member, International Advisory Committee ICPAC, Mauritius (2016, 2018 and 2020) and a recipient of ANSTI Conference Grant to ICPAC, Mauritius (2016). Prof. Obasi received the Elsevier Reviewer Recognition Award in 2013, 2018 and 2019. He has served as a Chairman and or Member, National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Panel for Undergraduate Programmes at the several federal and private universities, and affiliate programmes since 2017. He was a Chairman, LOC, Coalcitychem Conference (2016), Panelist, NEST-FUNAI Pre-Conference Seminar, Federal University, Ndifu-Aleke, Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State (2016), Member, LOC of 1 st International Workshop on ‘Science Parks
and Innovation Ecosystem for National Development’ at the University of Nigeria (2018) and a guest speaker at the maiden Conference of the School of Basic and Applied Sciences Taraba State Polytechnic, Suntai, Taraba State (2018). Prof. Obasi leads the Inorganic/Computational Chemistry Research Group in the University of Nigeria with focus on ‘Synthesis, Characterization, Computational and Biological Studies of complexes derived from Schiff base ligands’. Prof. Obasi’s research in synthetic chemistry has led to his team winning the TETFUND, Institution-Based Research grant in 2018. His research has given rise to several International collaborations as seen in most of his publications. His research work in metal organic frameworks (MOFs) published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering caught the attention of a researcher in Spain which led to a collaboration that resulted to a successful joint grant award by the Spanish government. Part of the benefits of this grant award is that one of his PhD students will visit the Collaborator’s lab for four months each in 2019, 2020 and 2021. This collaboration has also led to the signing of MoU between University of Nigeria and The Spanish National Research Council. Prof. Obasi was a recipient of the UNN Vice Chancellor’s financial award of academic excellence in 2018 for his publications in Thompson Reuters high impact factor Journals. He has also received two patents from the Federal Government of Nigeria for sets of novel compounds his team has synthesized. He has served as External Examiner for PhD candidates at the Department of Chemistry, University of Ilorin, Kwara State and External Assessor for Readership Positions at Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, Anambra State. Prof. Obasi is a reviewer for journals such as Applied Organometallic Chemistry, Journal of Chemical Society of Nigeria, African Journal of Biotechnology, Pakistan Journal of Chemistry, Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Ethiopia, Arabian Journal of Chemistry, Journal of molecular structure, Chemistryselect, Journal of Cluster Science, Solid State Sciences, Inorganic and Nano-Metal Chemistry, Journal of the Serbian Chemical Society, International Journal of Chemistry and Materials Research etc. Prof. Obasi has collaborators in various institutions across the continents viz; Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, Department Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT), Kanpur, India, Department Chemistry, University of Mauritius, Technische Universität, Fakultät für Chemie und Chemische Biologie, D-44221 Dortmund, Germany, Department of Physics, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Ondokuz May?s University, Samsun 55139, Turkey, The School of Chemical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia, Universität Regensburg, Fakultät für Chemie und Pharmazie Institut für Organische Chemie, 93053 Regensburg, Germany, Inorganic Materials & Catalysis Division, CSIR-Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar-364002, Gujarat, India etc. He has served the Department, Faculty of Physical Sciences and the University of Nigeria in various committees either as a member or Chairman. He has consulted for some national and international organizations including the Federal Ministry of Environment and UNIDO. Prof. Obasi is currently the Chairman, University of Nigeria Students’ disciplinary Committee.
He has published over 40 articles in both local and international peer-reviewed Journals with high impact factor. He has participated in some sponsored international and national conferences within and outside country. Prof. Obasi is a member of the following professional bodies: Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) and New York Academy of Science (NYAS). |
