Nkechinyere Onyekwere Nweze was born on the 31st of August, 1956 into the family of Chief Onyekwere Evurunobi (JP) and Late Mrs Bessie O. Evurunobi of Osusu,Isiala-Ngwa North LGA of Abia State. She holds Bachelors, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Botany of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) specializing in Freshwater Algology/Limnology and was employed briefly as a lecturer at the College of Education, Eha-Amufu before joining UNN as an Assistant Lecturer in 1989, rising to the position of Associate Professor of Botany in 2010. She served as Sabbatical Associate Professor at the Cross River University of Technology, Calabar in 2013/14 session. Her areas of research interest: various areas of Phycology (study of algae)/limnology, studies on the effect of industrial effluents, wastewaters and pollutants on the growth and yield of vegetable crops, environmental impact assessment of industries, bio-energy (biofuel) production from algae, isolation, phytochemical analysis and use of indigenous algae for bioremediation. She has edited some books and authored numerous book chapters and journal articles in both national and international journals; and served as internal and external examiner for Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. She is a member of many professional bodies: Botanical Society of Nigeria (Life Member); Phycological Society of Nigeria (Life Member and Vice President); Nigerian Society for Plant Protection; Society for Occupational Safety and Environmental Health; Biotechnology Society of Nigeria; and Fellow of Nigerian Institute of Waste Management. She has served in various university committees such as the Senate Ceremonials and University Staff Audit; and was the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, UNN, from 2008 – 2010. She represented and won laurels in table tennis, handball and badminton for the University of Nigeria at the National Universities Games Association (NUGA) Games and West African Universities Games WAUG) and Nigerian University Staff Games. She is a Lady of the Cathedral of St Paul, Nsukka Council of Knights; Life Member of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI) and the Secretary of the Hidden Treasure Recovery Ministry. She is happily married and blessed with four children and a grandchild.
