Biography :

Pat Uche Okpoko is a Professor of Cultural Tourism in the Department of Archaeology and Tourism. He also specializes in Social Impact Assessment. His other research interests are Corporate Reputation and Stakeholder Relations. Pat was the best graduating student in 1983 and 1988, respectively in both his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Cultural Anthropology and Master of Arts Degree in African Studies (Anthropology) of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. He won the Archaeology and Anthropology Departmental Prize in 1983. Prior to his tenure in this university, he had a stint at National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Lagos as an Ethnographer between January 1989 and June 1993, where he was rewarded with a Letter of Commendation for his resourcefulness and drive. He has published widely in his chosen areas of academic endeavour.

His Ph.D in Archaeology/Tourism of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka with emphasis on Social Impact Assessment and the ICASSRT (International Centre for Advanced Social Sciences Research and Training), The World Bank and ARFT certification in Environmental Impact Assessment brought him closer to the corporate world. Pat has been a Social Consultant and Resource person to a number of multinational companies and the Federal Ministry of Environment where he participates in Environmental Impact Assessment, non-technical risks challenge sessions and peer reviews. He spent his sabbatical leave on two successive occasions at Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Port Harcourt between October 2005 and September 2006, and November 2012 and October 2013, first as an Advisor on NGO and Stakeholder Management, and second as Research Advisor on Corporate Reputation and Stakeholder Relations.

Professor Okpoko has been Head, Department of Archaeology and Tourism, Dean, Faculty of Arts and current Chairman of Board, University of Nigeria Press Limited. He was the Editor, Nsukka Journal of the Humanities, and current Editor, Journal of Tourism and Heritage Studies. Pat is the founder and President, Association for Tourism Development in Nigeria, an umbrella body for tourism professionals in Nigerian universities, and has served as Chairman of NUC Accreditation teams, visiting professor, external examiner and professorial assessor to a number of universities.
