Prof. Ayonma Wilfred Mode obtained BSc (Geology) 1981, MSc (Stratigraphy/micropaleontology) 1985,and PhD (Petroleum Geology) 2002, from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is a COMEG registered Geoscientist. He began his career as an academician, at the AbubakarTafawaBalewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) in 1986 as Assistant Lecturer in Geology and was promoted Lecturer II in 1989. He joined the service of the University of Nigeria; Nsukka in 1991 as Lecturer I and rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 1994, and Professor in 2015. He has had research tenures in the oil & Gas industry during which he served as Exploration Advisor (2003-2004) and Senior Research Advisor (2011-2012) respectively in the Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd (SPDC). He also served as Learning Consultant in the Shell Intensive Training Programme (SITP) Warri (2007-2010). He was Acting Head, the Department of Geology (2009-2011 He has successfully supervised thirty-five postgraduate students. One of his PhD supervisees is currently a Professor at Anambra State University, Uli. Under his academic and administrative leadership, the Department of Geology UNN signed an MOU for research and cooperation between University of Nigeria and the International Consortium on Landslides(ICL) and the Disaster Prevention Research Instititute (DKPRI), Kyoto University, Japan in 2010.The Department also successfully carried out detailed Field mapping and Stratigraphic sampling of the Anambra Basin for a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Integrated Data Services Ltd( IDSL/NNPC) between 2010 and 2012.

In collaboration with colleagues and his students, he has done   extensive fieldwork in the Northern and Central Benue Trough, Abakaliki Basin and the Anambra Basin. His collaborative research effort with colleagues both in the oil and gas industry and academia ; particularly members of  the Basin Analysis and Reservoir Geology Research Group in UNN, has resulted in the publication of several high impact international journal articles.
