Biography :

Born on the 17th of July, 1947 in Akanu Ohafia, Abia State, Nigeria, Professor Kalu Mosto Onuoha had his primary and secondary school education at home in Nigeria, while his university education was at the Lorànd Eötvös University in Budapest, Hungary. At the university, he majored in Geophysics, obtaining the PhD degree (summa cum laude) in 1978. After about a decade of studies and post-doctoral research work in Europe, he returned to Nigeria and joined the services of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as Lecturer in the Department of Geology in 1980. At the UNN, Mosto Onuoha rose quickly through the ranks, becoming Head of the Department of Geology in 1987 and in October 1988, he was promoted to the position of a full Professor of Geology. After a nation-wide search, he was appointed in 1991 as the pioneer ExxonMobil Professor at the Mobil Producing Nigeria’s Chair of Petroleum Geology, at the University of Calabar (1991-92). Between 1996 and 2002, he was on leave of absence from the UNN and served as Technology Development Adviser (Subsurface Development Services) at the Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited, Port Harcourt. Shortly after returning to the University of Nigeria from Shell, he was appointed to the Shell/NNPC Chair of Geology (in January, 2003, a position he occupied until December 2012). He also served concurrently as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Nigeria between 2005 and 2009. Professor Mosto Onuoha has over the years successfully supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students. A good number of his mentees today hold top positions in the oil and gas industry and several are now serving as full professors in different universities within and outside Nigeria. In January 2013, he was appointed to the PTDF Chair of Petroleum Geology at the UNN. He was inducted as Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science in 1998 and currently serves as the Vice-President of the Academy. He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Mining & Geosciences Society (NMGS), Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and also of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). He has been a recipient of many awards and honours in his professional life some of which include: (i) “Chief M. O. Feyide Medal” of the Nigerian Mining & Geosciences Society (NMGS) in “recognition of excellent and consistent contribution to the Field of Petroleum Geology in Africa”. (ii) “Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe Prize” in recognition of consistently promoting the study of Earth Sciences.
