WELCOME TO THE FACULTY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

The current Dean of the Faculty is Professor (Mrs) P.C. ONOKALA (immediate past Associate Dean of the Faculty). She took over from the former Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu of the department of Political Science on August the 1st, 2008. Professor (Mrs) P.C. Onokala of the department of Geography is a renowned scholar and researcher of the highest pedigree. She will serve the faculty as Dean till July 31, 2010. The Associate Dean of the Faculty is Professor Egbeke Aja of the Department of Philosophy.  

The Faculty of the Social Sciences is one of the pioneer faculties of the University of Nigeria and presently consists of nine departments that greatly emphasize on the study of human behaviour namely Economics, Geography, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration and Local Government, Religion, Social Work, and Sociology/Anthropology. In addition, the faculty offers several inter-disciplinary Bachelor of Science Combined programmes referred to as the Combined Social Sciences (CSS).

The Faculty building is globally referred to as the RUSSWURM BUILDING. It accommodates the departments of Geography, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology/Anthropology. While, the department of Economics is located in the Ansah Goldie Building, the departments of Philosophy, Political Science, and Public Administration /Local Government are respectively located in the School of General Studies Complex (Marion Johnson Building), Old Local Government Building and new Local Government Building. The Dr Eugene Udebuani Halls A and B, The Chief Maduka Onyishi office complex and the newly completed Faculty theatre opposite personnel services department are some of the lecture facilities in the Faculty.

The following renowned social scientists have passed through the faculty and contributed immensely to development of an African Social Science in the University of Nigeria, Professors Odenigwe, Ikenna Nzimiro, Eme Awa, Humphrey Nwosu, K. Mathews, Elo Amucheazi, Assisi Asobie, Chuka Okonjo, Ogbu Kalu, Obikeze, Apia Okoroafor, O.E.Obinna, M.N. Ogbonna, Okore, Onyewuenyi, Eyo, Nwafor, Okwudiba Nnoli, Ofomata, Inyang Eteng, Felicia Ekejiuba, Eze Ogueri and so on. The current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo is a professor of Economics in the Faculty.
