NAME: COMPREHENSIVE PAEDIATRIC HIV AND AIDS MANAGEMENT (COMPHAM) RESEARCH GROUP
RESEARCH FOCUS: Improve our understanding of the peculiarities of paediatric HIV and AIDS in Africa. Develop strategies to sustain quality paediatric HIV care in the face of dwindling funds: integrated paediatric HIV and decentralization of services, task shifting, nutrition and adherence improvement strategies and reproductive health challenges of HIV-infected adolescents.
SOME PROPOSED RESEARCH TOPICS:
1. Baseline micronutrient status of HIV-infected and affected children
2. Placebo-controlled clinical trials involving use of various micronutrient supplements.
3. Factors that influence nutritional status of HIV-infected and affected children
4. Long term cardiovascular complications of HAART among HIV-infected children
5. How feasible is decentralization of paediatric HIV services: comparison of quality of HIV care at tertiary, secondary and primary health facilities
6. Role of technology in improving adherence to care and treatment among HIV-infected children.
7. Reproductive health challenges of HIV-infected adolescents
8. Are there early clinical predictors of early infant diagnosis of HIV?
9. Psycho-social problems of HIV-infected children
10. Cost effective family planning program in preventing unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women
