BEHAVIOUR AND ATTITUDE CHANGE RESEARCH GROUP (BARG)

BEHAVIOUR AND ATTITUDE CHANGE RESEARCH GROUP (BARG)
The development of any nation is dependent on the behaviour of the citizens of the country. Change cannot happen without the people. In essence, it is people who are drivers of change. It is what the people do (or do not do) that make the difference. In organizations, the leaders must understand and apply the knowledge of behavioural sciences and the lessons from psychological science to manage organizational change successfully.  Every effort at social change must recognize that the change process starts from individuals changing their thinking, beliefs and behaviour. The knowledge base in terms of basic and applied research in this area, within the Nigerian setting are few.
Many health conditions are caused by risk behaviours. Changing human behaviour is key to addressing leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Behaviour is also central to how people manage chronic illnesses, e.g. HIV/AIDS, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, etc. In health research, the increased influence of prevention has coincided with increased aid in the area of human development, and the increased need for the international development community to show cost-effectiveness for allocated human and financial resources spent.
The aim of the group is to promote research, education, training, mentoring, clinical, organisational and health practice, and policy development in the area of behaviour change and psychosocial interventions. The BARG will promote basic and applied research on the initiation, adoption and maintenance of behaviour change. It will further allow sharing of ideas, and foster collaboration with the aim of developing methods for specifying intervention content, evaluating the theory base of interventions and linking behaviour change techniques to theory.
