The Faculty of Physical Sciences at UNN has a strong tradition and culture of quality research, teaching and outreach programmes. Our degrees, both undergraduate and postgraduate, enjoy a high reputation in the private and public sectors in Nigeria and as well as internationally. The faculty is well placed to contribute substantially to our goal of becoming a research-led university. The faculty is endowed with two research chairs (Shell and PTDF chairs). The Faculty of Physical Sciences comprises five Departments: Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physic and Astronomy, Pure and Industrial Chemistry and Statistics. The Faculty offers an exciting suite of undergraduate and post graduate programmes, leading to the BSc, M. Sc. and PhD degrees. The programmes comprise groups of related subjects which together make up a balanced three- or four-year degree structure. Our programmes ensure a coherent degree structure while encouraging interdisciplinarity. Programmes are structured in such a way as to provide graduates with the range of communication skills that the job market seeks and values. Our graduates develop a range of skills that can be transferred and translated into a wide variety of different fields.Large numbers of students from virtually all the other faculties and departments in UNN enrolled for courses. Postgraduate programmes form an integral and key component of the academic activity of the Faculty, and are offered at Honours, Masters and Doctoral levels. Masters programmes may be by dissertation only, or by coursework and dissertation. Examination of the PhD degree is by dissertation only. The student body is cosmopolitan, and is drawn from all regions in South Africa, from elsewhere in Africa, and from other parts of the world. |
