Training Objectives
The Internal Medicine course covers a period of 30-32 weeks altogether during the 4th to 6th years of training of the medical students.  It is given as 4 postings: M1- M4   in a longitudinal interdisciplinary pattern. The course is delivered through lectures, and clinical postings under consultants in different specialties of medicine.
Students commence their Clinical Medicine training in their 3rd year of study for the MB BS Degree.  At this point they would have passed the 1st MB (Basic Sciences) and 2nd MB examinations (Medical Sciences).

The objectives
To integrate the students’ knowledge of basic, medical, and pathological sciences with clinical presentation of diseases in order to produce skilleddiagnostician/clinicians, efficient, effective caring physicians and promoters of health.

Acquire proficiency in the management of common diseases through hands on experience.

Acquire skills in diagnostic  processes through  observation, history taking, eliciting of  physical signs.

Interpret  laboratory and other investigations properly.

Integrate all the information leading to a correct and complete diagnosis as well as correct management of the patient.

In the course of this training it is ensured that students acquire skills and competences and attitude in:

History taking

Social skills for doctor patient interaction

Skills for educating patient and patients’ relative in self care, disease prevention and health promotion.

Physical examination of the patient generally as well as system by system.

Correct bedside manners

Skills for simple clinical procedures

Skills for using IT in self-directed learning and research

Acquire and become proficient in basic clinical skills of physical examination, mental status examination, and interpretation of findings.

Demonstrate proficiency in recording findings and presenting a complete history in an accurate, organized, unbiased manner that brings into focus the patient’s problems.

Demonstrate effective communication skills in interactions with patients and patient’s relatives, colleagues and other members of the health care team.

Utilize the information from history, and physical examinations to list differential diagnosis and plan appropriate laboratory investigations, management as well as drug treatment and patient counseling

Acquire a wide knowledge of common diseases including the genetic, molecular, Socio economic and environmental influences.

Skills for using IT in self directed learning and research.
