The department of Psychological Medicine in UNTH and UNEC was established with the help of the foundation psychiatrist Prof. U. H. Ihezue in 1973.  Gradually later other psychiatrists and clinical psychologists had to join him, but some have since left for greener pastures.  Initially the psychiatric posting for students lasted for only two weeks but this has now lengthened to one month.
