 The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the many departments that began the University of Nigeria Medical School. It began in 1971 as a Sub-Department of Surgery. Its undergraduate programme constitutes an important and compulsory part of the General Surgery curriculum of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The total number of academic staff is 10 made up of 3 professors, 2 senior lecturers, 4 lecturers 1 and one adjunct senior lecturers. Support staffs include an ophthalmic Optician, 5 optometrist and a complement of nursing staff 90 % of who are Ophthalmic trained. Daily outpatient and surgical services are conducted at the Eye theatre respectively. In addition to the services offered at UNTH-Ituku Ozalla, outreach eye care services are conducted monthly at the Abagana Comprehensive Health Centre.
