This department was a part of Faculty of Medical Sciences which started in 1967 but which was then a sub-department of the department of Medicine. It was not till 1973 that the department   Paediatrics started as a full-fledged department with Drs Winifred Nwawularu Kaine and Arum Ifekwunigwe as academic staff with Dr George Ike as a Registrar. Paediatrics department was therefore the last of the 4 (four) major clinical departments in the Faculty of Medicine and in the Teaching Hospital of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. The main campus of this university is at Nsukka. In 1974, Drs Azubuike and Okeahialam differently beefed the number before the arrival of Dr Edwin O. Okoroma to form what was later to be referred to as the ‘founding fathers’ of this department. Today, there are 15 Lecturer/Consultants, 57 Resident doctors and 50 House-Officers in addition to 1 hospital – based Consultant and 3 Supra-nummary doctors (those seconded for training from some hospitals which do not run Residency Training Programme but who would go back at the expiration of their contract period or at the end of their training – whichever comes first).
