Our History

The current Department of Haematology and Immunology evolved from a Pathological Science Complex. Between 1971 and 1974, separate Departments of Pathology were created but due to lack of manpower, Chemical Pathology and Haematology were joined together. Later, the Department of Haematology & Immunology was created. The founding fathers of Pathology were Dr. I. O. Udeozor and Prof A.N.U Njoku Obi. During this pioneering period, there were notable Laboratory Scientists and Technicians who were involved in the building of the Department such as Chief Nlemadim, Mrs Nwosu and Mr T.O Onyekwere.

Staffing improved subsequently with two Immunology lecturers Prof G.O. Okafor and Dr J.L.I. Odili and one Haematologist, Dr G.O.Obi and that gave basis for the Department of Haematology and Immunology to be administered as one by Dr. G.O Obi. Dr. O.G. Ibegbulam joined the Department in 2000. Prof Okafor, Dr. Odili and and Dr Ibegbulam have headed the Department on various occasions. Dr Sunday Ocheni and Professor Iheanyi Okpala joined the Department in 2004 and 2008 respectively. Dr Ocheni is the current acting Head of Department.
