 The Department of Morbid Anatomy was founded as a component of Faculty of Medicine of the Medical School, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. The Faculty was established in 1967. The department is one of the 4 departments that constitute the division of Pathological Sciences of the present Faculty of Medical Sciences.Between 1970 and 1973 all the components of the Pathological Sciences constituted just one department (Department of Pathology) and the first Head of Department during these years was Late Prof. I.O.K. Udeozor. In 1973 Morbid Anatomy was then carved out as a separate department. Right from the onset of the department in 1973, it operated administratively as a single unit with two components: the teaching wing in the College of Medicine of the University of Nigeria and the diagnostic wing in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.Prof. Gupta was the first Head of Department and he headed it between 1973 and 1975. Dr. Suzilan took over from him and headed the department between 1975 and 1976 and then handed over to Dr. Ikerionwu who headed the department between 1976 and 1978. Dr. Ikerionwu later handed over to Prof. W.I.B. Onuigbo. Other pathologists who have lectured in the Department at various periods over these years include: Prof Agnesima Jacob, Dr. Ejekam, and Dr. Paramesiwarie. Dr D.B Olusina and Dr Okafor were the immediate past heads of Department. Currently the department is headed by Dr M.A NZEGWU. The Department of Morbid Anatomy is involved primarily in teaching, research, and diagnosis of clinical and surgical specimens and residency training of specialist pathologist. The department is also involved in the formation of medical students for the 3rd MB;BS professional examination as well as students from the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, UNTH and Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology.
