In 1975, the Sub-Department of Dermatology was established as a specialist unit in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, (UNTH). It is a full fledged department in the teaching hospital, though in the College of Medicine it is still a sub-department.

Its pioneer academic staff was Professor Anezi-Okoro who worked tirelessly to increase the staff strength to 4 (Dr. Osunkwo, Dr. Okafor and Dr. Egere). Dr. Egere later become a professor of dermatology at the University of Jos. Professor Okoro, Drs Obiagboso and Okafor continued to carry the burden of student training, clinical services and research until 1989 when Prof. Okoro left on sabbatical leave. The sub-department was almost starved of staff until 1992 when Dr Ozoh joined as a lecturer and became the coordinator.
