The Department of Community Medicine is one of the Departments, which started with the founding of the University of Nigeria Medical School in 1970.
The department started off with 2 office rooms in 1970 and moved into the present office block in 1985. The same year, the department acquired two outreach comprehensive health centres at Obukpa, Enugu State and Abagana, Anambra State. By 1979, the Community Health Officers training block was acquired. While the Isuochi Comprehensive Health Centre, Abia State came on board in 2000. With further expansion in 2002, physical structures extended into the permanent site at Ituku Ozalla with the development of a model Public Health Laboratory and Museum. In 2003, a Tuberculosis Research Laboratory was also acquired through a research grant from the World Health Organization. There are 4 Lecture / Seminar Rooms for departmental use. 

The academic staff has increased from 3 full-time lectures in 1970 to its preset strength of 12 full-time ( 1 professor, 6 Senior Lecturers, 4 Lecturers 1), 2 adjunct Professor   & 6 part-time lecturers.  The non-academic staff strength rose from 2 in 1970 to 16 in 2007. The number of Primary Health Care workers stands at 130.
