This is a department of human anatomy that subserves primarily the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The department also offers anatomy courses to two other faculties within the College of Medicine:-
 The Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology (FHST), &
 The Faculty of Dentistry.

The Department of Anatomy was established in 1970 at the end of the Nigerian, (Biafra) – Civil war in a dis - used “Boys Quarters” at the Enugu Campus of the University. In the same year, temporary dissection laboratory was put up with home made concrete slabs for dissection tables. The temporary Histology Block was also added during the 1973/74 session.
Dr. F. N. Udeh from the Department of Surgery was the first Acting Head of Department of Anatomy (1970 – 1977).
He was then been assisted by the two other foundation members of the senior staff – Mr. F.I. Okpa, a Senior Tutor Prosector and MR. G. I. Ibeachum, a Superintending Technologist. The number of the Intermediate and Junior Staff was a total of 17(seventeen).
The first batch of students admitted for the 1970/71 session numbered 59.   The teaching load was somewhat eased at that time by the generous help from the staff of the surgery Department and Resident Doctors, as part-time Demonstrators.
