POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA

 

The available higher degree and postgraduate diploma programmes offered by the University are as indicated below.   Usually candidates on full-time employment are not eligible to apply for full-time studies.

 

1.             FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

 

M.Sc and Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Agricultural Economics; Agricultural Extension; Animal Science; Crop Science; Food Science and Technology; Home Science, Nutrition & Dietetics; and Soil Science.  (Please note that the Dept. of Agricultural Extension has no facilities for the following: Animal Breeding & Genetics; Feed Formulation and Feed Mill Management and that the Department of Animal Science has no facilities for M.Sc and Ph.D in Animal Breeding and Genetics.)

 

2.             FACULTY OF ARTS

 

M.A., and Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Archaeology; Foreign Languages & Literature; Mass Communication; and Theatre Arts while M.A. and M.F.A. are offered in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts.  Department of Music offers M.A. only.  (Please note that the Dept. of Foreign Languages has no facilities for M.A. and Ph.D programmes in Oral Literature).

 

3.             FACULTY OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

 

M.Sc and Ph.D; programmes are offered by the Departments of Biochemistry; Botany;  Microbiology; and Zoology.

 

4.             FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

 

MBA, M.Sc., & Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Accountancy; Banking & Finance; Management; and Marketing.  Candidates with Higher National Diploma (HND) Upper Credit, or its equivalent or those whose first degrees, are in fields other than Business administration, with minimum of good third class are eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Business administration.  Candidates may apply for Regular or Executive (Evening) MBA programme as well as for programmes leading to M.Sc & Ph.D (Public Relations) in the Department of Marketing.

 

5.             FACULTY OF EDUCATION

 

M.Ed and Ph.D. are offered by the Departments of Adult Education; Educational Foundations; Arts Education; Science Education; Health and Physical Education (Health Education and Physical Education & Recreation options);  Library & Information Science and Vocational Teacher Education.

6.             FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

 

M.Eng/M.Sc and Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Electronics Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering.  The Department of Electronic Engineering has no facilities for the Control Systems.

 

7.             FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

 

M.Sc and Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Architecture; Estate Management; Surveying and Geoinformatics; and MURP, and Ph.D in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning.

 

8.             FACULTY OF LAW

 

LL.M and Ph.D are offered in the Departments of Public & Private Law, Property and Commercial Law and International Law & Jurisprudence.

 

9.             FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AND DENTISTRY

 

M.Sc and Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Anatomy; Medical Biochemistry; Pharmacology & Therapeutics; and Human Physiology; while MPH and MCH are offered by the Department of Community Medicine.  Departments of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology offer M.Sc only while the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics offers M.Sc, Ph.D & MD.

 

10           FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES & TECHNOLOGY

14           FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

 

M.Sc and Ph.D are offered by the Departments of Veterinary Anatomy: Veterinary Medicine; Veterinary Parasitology & Pharmacology; Veterinary Surgery & Obstetrics; Veterinary Pathology & Microbiology and Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine. The Faculty offers M.V.M degree in Preventive Veterinary Medicine; Veterinary Surgery & Radiology; Veterinary Obstetrics; & Reproduction Diseases; and Veterinary Public Health & Zoonosis Diseases.

NOTES: Where applicable, candidates will be expected to specialize in one of the fields of study within the Department (see Prospectus).  There are no special areas within some Departments such as Architecture, Library Science and Mass Communication.

INSTITUTE FOR DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

PGD; M.Sc; & Ph.D in Development Studies are offered by the Institute for Development Studies.

CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL (CEMAC)

 

PGD, M.Sc, and Ph.D degrees are offered by the Centre for Environmental Management and Control (CEMAC)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The following may qualify for admission:

1.             Postgraduate Diploma Programme

(a)          Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other recognized universities who have obtained a bachelors degree with a minimum of pass. Such candidates should have a minimum of five credits in WASC or GCE or NECO including at least one science subject and a pass in Mathematics.

(b)          Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) from recognized institutions, with a minimum of upper level credit or its equivalent in relevant areas. Candidates with HND should have obtained a minimum of 5 credits in WAS C or GCE O/L or NECO, including at least one science subject and a pass in Mathematics.

2.             Master of Science (M.Sc Environmental Management and Control) Programme

(a)          Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other recognized universities who have obtained the approved degree, with a minimum of second class honours division or its equivalent in any of the relevant disciplines.

(b)          Candidates with university honours degree who also hold the PGD in Environmental Management and Control of the University of Nigeria or other recognized universities with a minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale.

3.             Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Management and Control) Programme.

Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other recognized universities who have obtained the degree of M.Sc in Environmental Management and Control or its equivalent with a minimum mode of study of 2/3 by research and 1/3 by coursework. A minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale is required.

4.             M.Sc/Ph.D

Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other recognized universities who have obtained the degree of M.Sc in Environmental Management and Control or its equivalent without the 2/3 research content and whose GPA is at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on 4-point scale. Such candidates will be required to enroll for the M.Sc/Ph.D to enable them make up for their research deficiency. The candidate so admitted will be required to write an examinable dissertation during the first two semesters of his/her study and obtain at least a grade of “B” before proceeding to the Ph.D programme.

DURATION OF COURSES

 

(a)           Postgraduate Diploma (Regular) – Two semesters

(b)           Postgraduate Diploma (Sandwich) – Three Long Vacations

(c)            Master’s degree (Regular) – 12 months for full-time and 3 Semesters for part-time.

(d)           M.Ed. M.A. (Sandwich) three long vacations

(e)           Ph.D. 3 calendar years minimum and 5 calendar years maximum for full-time, 3 calendar years minimum and 6 calendar years maximum for part-time. (Ph.D is not run as a sandwich programme.)

 

Candidates are expected to complete their programme at the minimum duration but not to exceed the maximum. The duration of the Evening (Executive) programmes is the same as for part-time programmes.

 

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

 

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA

 

i)              Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other recognized Universities.

 

ii)             Holders of credit (Upper credit) level passes at HND or its equivalent in

relevant areas (for programmes in the Faculties of Agriculture; Business Administration; in the Departments of Political Science; Public Administration & Local Government; and Vocational Teacher Education.); and for Postgraduate Diploma in Electoral Administration Programme and Public Administration & Local Government; and Department of Vocational Teacher Education). Qualifications such as A.I.B., ACCA., ACMA., ICAN., BEEC., C.P.A., etc may also be considered for admission.

Candidates with professional qualifications including HND must have obtained 5 credits in WASC or GCE O/L including English and Mathematics for admission for degree courses in Business Administration. For Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture, as well as Geoinformatics and Surveying in particular, candidates with third class honours degrees in their respective disciplines are also eligible. For Postgraduate Diploma in Geoinformatics and Surveying in particular, candidates with third class honours degrees in Geography, Geology and other Physical Sciences, as well as HND Upper Credit level passes in related fields, are also eligible.

 

ii)             Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above which are acceptable to the Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies, and Senate of the University.

 

Please note that in all cases, candidates should possess the minimum entry requirements for admission into the first degree programmes in their areas of interest for postgraduate studies. For the PGD in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture, only candidates with University degrees in relevant areas need apply.

 

                MASTER’S DEGREE

 

(i)             The following shall qualify for Masters Degree admission: Graduates of the University of Nigeria or of other recognized universities who have obtained the degree of Bachelor in the relevant disciplines with at least a good second class honours.

 

(ii)            Candidates with relevant Postgraduate Diplomas from the University of Nigeria with at least at credit level passes.

 

 

(iii)           Candidates whose first degrees are unclassified but have scores of 50% or above.

 

(iv)           For M.Ed degree, candidates with at least, good second class single honour degree in teaching subjects plus at least a merit level pass at Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or those who hold a third class honours degree in Education or a single honors degree in teaching subjects with at least 5 years postgraduate teaching experience, plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education passed at Merit level or above.

 

(v)            For MPA, candidates should, in addition to (1) and (2) above, be serving administrative /managerial staff in the Public or Private sector with a minimum of two years post-qualification cognate experience.

 

(vi)           Holders of professional Fellowship qualifications such a FIMLT, FNILT, NIPR, or their equivalents obtained through examination. Candidates with the professional certificates listed above must have worked as Senior Technologist (s) or in equivalent position(s) for at least three years.

 

(vii)          Candidates who hold qualifications other than those listed above, which are acceptable to the Senate of the University.

                

 

DOCTORATE DEGREE (Ph.D)

 

(a)           Candidates of the University of Nigeria or of other recognized Universities who have obtained the Masters degree appropriate for the proposed areas of study with a minimum of 3.50 grade point average on a 5-point scale or ‘B’ average provided that satisfactory research work formed part of the Masters degree programme.

 

(b)           Demonstrated evidence of completed academic research will be an advantage.

 

MASTER’S/Ph.D PROGRAMME

 

(a)      A candidate with first class honours or second class honours (Upper Division) from a recognized University may be admitted into a Masters/Ph.D programme.

(b)      A candidate with Master’s degree from the University with a grade point average of 3.50 on 5-point or 3.00 on 4-point scale shall qualify for the Master’s/Ph.D or Ph.D.

 

REGISTRATION

 

For Regular/Evening programme, Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s candidates are considered for admission once in a session, while Doctorate degree candidates may register at the beginning of the first or second semester.  Candidates admitted for sandwich courses are expected register as soon as the programme commences.

 

METHOD OF APPLICATION

 

Prospective candidates should apply to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, for application forms, enclosing an application fee of N5,000.00 only.  Certified bank drafts made payable to the University of Nigeria are acceptable.  Candidates could pay and obtain forms at the School of Postgraduate Studies, Nsukka, or at the School of Postgraduate Studies Unit, Enugu Campus, or at the Liaison Office of the University at No. 12 Ashogbon Street, (Off Adeniyi-Jones Avenue), Ikeja, Lagos (Tel.(01) 4964701, and 4978591).  Ph.D Candidates should specify which semester they wish to be considered for.  Requests for application forms not accompanied by the prescribed application fee will not be processed.  Candidates applying for forms should enclose a stamped self addressed large envelope measuring 35.5cm x 22.5cm for mailing the forms to them.

 

REFEREE REPORTS

 

Candidates should enclose referee reports on them in sealed envelopes when returning their completed forms (where possible), or request their referees to mail them directly to:
