Becoming a Student at UNN

You are a PROSPECTIVE student if you are seeking admission into any programme in the University. You must have passed the screening test of the University though. When you go to UNN website www.unn.edu.ng you are to click on UNN Portal link on the right hand side of the home page. This will take you to the UNN Portal where you will register according to you group. Please click on the Prospective Student link for further information and instructions.

You are a NEW student if you have just been granted admission by the University and duly cleared. When you go to UNN website www.unn.edu.ng you are to click on the UNN Portal link on the right hand side of the home page. This will take you to the UNN Portal where you will register according to you group. Please click on the New Student link for further information and instructions.

You are a RETURNING student if you are in your second year of study and above. Go to UNN website www.unn.edu.ng and click on UNN Portal link on the right hand side of the home page. This will take you to the UNN Portal where you will register according to you group. Please click on the Returning Student link to log into your Student Portal for further information and instructions.

For somebody to become a student, he or she have to meet the following General Entry Requirements

1.             Age Limit

                No person under the age of sixteen years may be admitted to the University as a student.

2.             Admission Requirements

                There are three alternative methods of admission into the University, namely:

 

(i)            Admission by Entrance Examination (Through J.M.E)- University by Entrance examination:

(a)           Holders of the School Certificate or the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level with credit level passes (Grades 1-6) in five subjects including an approved Science subject (see Appendix A) obtained at not more than two sittings. Such candidates must possess at least a pass in English Language.

(b)           Holders of the School Certificate or the General certificate of Education Ordinary Level with not less than three credit passes obtained at one sitting plus the Teachers' Grade II Certificate with at least two merit passes. Passes in the above examination must include credit in the case of SC/GCE `O' Level or merit (in the case of TC II) in an approved Science subject. Such candidates must possess at least a pass in English Language:

            Note:  Merit pass in a Federal subject in TC II is equivalent to Credit level pass in School Certificate or General Certificate of Education.

(c)       Holders of educational qualifications set out in 2(ii) (a) -(e) below. Such candidates on admission will be enrolled for the same degree programme (including the length of the course) as candidates with qualification set out in 2(i)(a)and(b) above.

               

(ii)           Admission by Direct Entry:

(a)          Holders of the School Certificate/GCE Ordinary Level and the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in two subjects at Principal or Advanced Level together with passes at subsidiary or credit level in three other subjects;

(b)           Holders of the School Certificate/GCE Ordinary Level and the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in three subjects at Principal or Advanced Level together with a pass in one other subject at subsidiary or credit level;

(c)           Holders of the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in four subjects at Principal Level. The number of passes indicated in 2(ii)(a)-(c) above should be obtained at not more than two sittings;

(d)           Holders of the School Certificate or its equivalent with at least four credit level passes and a pass in English Language plus approved 2-year Diploma(see Appendix B for list of Diplomas acceptable for related Courses);

(e)           Holders of post-secondary qualifications beyond the levels of 2(ii) (a)-(c) above. Such qualifications include degree and diplomas of this and other Universities or Institutions recognized by the University (se Appendix C);

(f)            Holders of the Diploma in Music Education of this University with the degree programme in Music;

(g)           Holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), with at least a Merit aggregate; plus a minimum of credit pass in the subject to be combined with Education are eligible for admission into the two-year degree programme in Education.

 

(ii)           Admission by Transfer (Direct application to the University and not through the Joint Admissions and matriculation Board-JAMB):

                Candidates applying for transfer admission into the University of Nigeria will be required among other things:

(a)           to purchase and complete the prescribed Application Form obtainable from the office of the Registrar (Admissions) University of Nigeria, Nsukka;

(b)           To hold the minimum entry qualifications for admission into  the University of Nigeria and Departmental entry requirements, prior to entry into the University from where they are seeking transfer;

(c)           to be prepared to continue with the same courses as they were pursuing in the University from where they are seeking transfer:

(d)           To have made normally a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.

Note:      Students expelled or suspended from their Universities for acts of misconduct are not eligible for admission into the University of Nigeria. In addition to the minimum entry requirements outlined in 2(i) to 2(ii) above, candidates must also satisfy such Faculty/Departmental entry requirements set out for the Faculty/Department concerned.

Regulations on Occasional Students

1.      Classification

The following may be regarded as occasional students of the University:

(a)     Postgraduate students registered for the degree of other Universities, who are working full-time within the University or attached to the University for their field work.

(b)     Postgraduate students resident at the University, or attached to the University in some other capacity, who are working part-time for the degree of other Universities.

(c)     Undergraduates of other Universities who, by special arrangement with the University are spending part of their undergraduate careers in the University. Such students include those enrolled under the Junior Year Abroad programme.

(d)     Casual students either at undergraduate or postgraduate level, wishing to audit courses of the University for a period of one year or less and do not have any degree, certificate or diploma in view.

 

2.     Method of Admission

(a)     Applications for recognitions as an occasional student may be made either directly to the Registrar, or through the relevant Head of Department or the relevant Dean of Faculty.

(b)     Subject to the approval of Senate on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Board, the admission of an occasional student shall be made after the University shall have been satisfied.

(i)      of the prospective occasional student's academic, financial and personal standing;

(ii)     that the academic facilities, which the prospective occasional student requires are currently available and may be used without detriment to their use by regular students of the University, and

(iii)    that the admission of the candidates as occasional student does not constitute an abuse of University facilities and that the student will not use the opportunity to prepare for pre-University examinations.

A person enrolled as an occasional student must have qualifications similar, or equivalent, to the minimum entry requirement of the University for the particular courses for which the occasional student is admitted.

3.             Fees 

                Occasional students admitted under these regulations will be required to pay the same sessional fees, or part thereof, as regular students of the University at the appropriate level. The fee structure for non-Nigerian regular students applies for occasional students that are not Nigerians. A copy of the approved fee structure for all category of students may be obtained from the Bursar in the Students Account Unit.

4.             Facilities

                As much as possible, occasional students admitted under these regulations, will enjoy the same facilities as regular students, except that in the allocation of residential accommodation, categories 1 (a), (b), and (d) above will have low priority.

5.             University Examinations

                Occasional students will not be admitted to formal examinations of the University.

6.             Undertaking

                Any student admitted under these regulations shall, on entry to the University, sign an undertaking

1.       to deposit in the University Library, a copy of any theses, dissertation, articles, or monographs, or any other material which he shall produce on the basis of his study at the University;

 2.   to acknowledge the assistance of the University in the text of  any such works.
